In ten years, I see myself working as a team leader in hotel housekeeping, overseeing operations in cleaning, laundry, and maintenance. Over the past several years, my understanding and appreciation of the hospitality industry have significantly deepened. Initially, I viewed it primarily as a customer service field focused on hospitality and comfort, but my experiences and education have revealed the intricate and interconnected nature of its various sectors. Today, I recognize that the industry is a complex, multifaceted domain where service, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction are intertwined to create memorable experiences for guests and clients alike.

In ten years, I envision myself advancing within this expansive industry, working toward a leadership role in hotel operations, specifically in housekeeping. My interest lies in managing a team responsible for maintaining cleanliness and order, which I find highly rewarding. I enjoy the physicality of the work and take pride in transforming spaces to meet high standards of cleanliness. The role of a team leader in this area involves supervising housekeeping staff, coordinating laundry services, and overseeing maintenance tasks, all aimed at enhancing the guest experience.

My passion for cleaning and organization aligns well with this career aspiration. While housekeeping and laundry services might not traditionally be associated with glamour, I perceive them as vital components of hospitality that require skill, attention to detail, and dedication. Providing a clean, safe environment is an act of service that fulfills my personal needs and professional aspirations. It also offers a pathway to leadership and greater responsibilities within the industry, allowing me to grow and develop further.

Beyond my interest in hotel operations, my experiences in the transportation industry, specifically working at Dollar/Thrifty rental cars, have broadened my understanding of hospitality’s customer service aspect. In this role, I often encounter challenging customers who can be difficult to handle, which has strengthened my interpersonal skills. Previously, working five years in the hotel industry, I learned that guests tend to be more understanding when they see genuine effort and empathy from staff.

One notable example from my hotel experience involved assisting a guest who arrived without a reservation during a busy convention period. She was distressed because her husband was hospitalized after a vehicle accident, and she needed to stay close to the hospital. Initially, front desk staff told her no rooms were available, but I took the initiative to communicate with the event organizers to see if other arrangements could be made. Through negotiation and understanding, we arranged for her to share a room with other convention attendees, allowing her to stay nearby and be close to her husband. This experience reinforced my belief in the importance of excellent communication and compassion in hospitality.

My initial exposure to hospitality was through a retirement home where I worked with a hospitality director. However, I never fully appreciated the behind-the-scenes work involved in providing exceptional service until I took this class. I now understand that hospitality is a form of art that requires collaboration among many roles, from management to service staff, all dedicated to serving others with professionalism and care.

This course has significantly enhanced my skills and confidence in customer service. I have become more adept at effective communication, problem-solving, and understanding customer needs. The industry’s diversity of roles, from small community events like art shows in parks to large-scale operations like theme parks, has become more apparent to me. Looking toward the future, I am eager to advance my career and eventually own or manage a five-star hotel or start my own hospitality business. My passion for service, combined with the skills I am developing through this education, makes me confident that I will achieve these goals.
