Concepts and methods are applied to managerial decision-making in the delivery of healthcare services to address community/population health issues. An evidence-based and data-driven approach is used to explore the determinants of health and assess the health status and healthcare needs of populations. The role of healthcare organizations in the development of intervention strategies to improve quality and delivery of health services in the community is explored. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Apply epidemiologic and population health concepts to managerial decision making. Assess relevant data sources to propose appropriate intervention strategies for current population/community health issues. Describe the basic concepts and principles of epidemiology and public health. Differentiate sources of quantitative and qualitative data and their use in monitoring population health at the local, state, and national levels. Examine health disparities, determinants of health, and the occurrence of disease in populations.

Throughout this course, I gained a comprehensive understanding of population health and the vital role of epidemiology in shaping healthcare strategies. One of the most compelling topics was the exploration of social determinants of health, which significantly influence health outcomes across different populations (Braveman et al., 2011). Recognizing how factors like socioeconomic status, education, and environment impact health disparities provided me with a broader perspective on addressing health issues beyond clinical interventions alone. Participating in discussions enriched my understanding by offering diverse viewpoints and real-world examples that illustrated theoretical concepts. Engaging with peers helped clarify complex ideas related to data sources and the application of epidemiologic methods to problem-solving. For instance, discussion on the use of qualitative versus quantitative data deepened my appreciation of how different types of information inform public health policies and program evaluation (Meadows et al., 2013).

Despite the clarity achieved in most areas, I remain curious about advanced statistical methods used for health disparities analysis. Overall, this course has reinforced the importance of data-driven, evidence-based decision-making in public health. It has equipped me with foundational knowledge to evaluate health data critically and consider various determinants of health when proposing interventions. Continued exploration of epidemiological techniques and their practical applications will further enhance my ability to contribute effectively to population health management.
