The assertion that Nel is the true protagonist of Toni Morrison’s novel "Sula" because she undergoes significant transformation by the end is compelling, yet I believe that Sula herself is the central figure driving the narrative. While Nel’s development is evident—particularly in her moral choices and her perceptions of loyalty—Sula’s character embodies the novel’s thematic core of self-identity and defiance. For instance, Sula’s rejection of societal expectations is evident when she leaves her hometown to live freely in her own terms, exemplified by her declaration: “I’ll be everything but a lady” (Morrison, p. 69). Her friendship with Nel also acts as a catalyst for Nel’s own evolution, especially after Sula’s betrayal involving the death of Plum, Nel’s brother. Sula’s choices challenge conventional morals, and her sense of self remains resilient despite societal rejection. Moreover, her return to the community symbolizes a confrontation with her past and proves her centrality to the novel’s message. Therefore, even though Nel experiences growth, Sula’s character embodies the narrative’s core themes of independence, identity, and resistance, making her the true protagonist.
