The ART21 series offers a compelling glimpse into the minds and processes of contemporary artists, revealing the diverse ways they approach their craft. In selecting and analyzing five artists from the series, I aimed to understand their unique concerns and philosophies towards art-making.
The artist most concerned with the process of making their work is Sarah Sze. Her meticulous approach to construction and her focus on the physical act of assembling her intricate installations exemplify an intense dedication to process. She emphasizes the importance of how her work is made, often engaging in a detailed series of steps that involve patience, precision, and a deep understanding of her materials. Her videos reveal her hands-on engagement with the materials, highlighting her belief that the process itself is integral to the final piece. Sze’s focus on process reflects an artistic philosophy that values craftsmanship and method as central to artistic expression.
The artist most concerned with creativity in the idea for their art is Yinka Shonibare. His work is driven largely by conceptual innovation and the exploration of identity, colonialism, and cultural hybridity. Shonibare’s ideas challenge viewers to rethink preconceived notions of history and culture through his provocative use of Victorian costumes and Dutch wax fabrics. He prioritizes conceptual depth over material considerations, crafting works that provoke thought and debate. His conceptual focus demonstrates a dedication to the power of ideas to reshape perceptions and spark societal discussions.

The artist who surprised me the most is Kara Walker. Her provocative and provocative silhouettes challenge viewers with their raw depiction of race, gender, and history.
