ART2010—Discussion Board –Due Wednesday 11/22/17 @ 6pm All discussion post must include citations, list references, and you cannot say “I agreeâ€. You must reply have an INITIAL post with a minimum of 200 words and reply to TWO classmates with a minimum of 150 words. **Please complete the Initial post and reply to TWO classmates, currently I only have one. I will add the second one by Friday evening. Topic: Choose one culture that was studied in the lesson. Discuss some characteristics of the artwork from this culture and its relevance to the culture of the people who created it.
1st Classmate Response—Shantell: The culture which intrigued me for this week's discussion forum was the Sumerians. Their artwork reflects the reverence of their Gods. The tallest figure which measures about 30 inches in height represents the god of vegetation (Sumerian Art and Architecture, n.d.). The next tallest sculpture represents the mother-goddess, which were worshiped in hopes that they would bring about fertility. Sumerian artwork and architecture, primarily used for religious purposes, was very ornate and detailed.
Because clay was an abundant material available to them, much of their art consists of sculptures and paintings (Sumerian Art and Architecture, n.d.). Sumerian sculptures known as votive statues offer prayers while the majority of male statuettes display hands clasped in a prayer attitude. The architecture of the Sumerian people consisted of temples to worship their gods (Sumerian Art and Architecture, n.d.). Sumerians were very religious and much of their art and architecture reflects the relevance of their religious beliefs. References Art Appreciation. (2010).
