The biome I live in is the temperate forest biome, which experiences variable temperatures throughout the year and receives abundant moisture, making it an ecosystem rich in biodiversity. This area supports various plant and animal species, serving as a critical habitat. However, human activities have drastically altered this biome, as industrialization and urban development have emerged as significant contributors to environmental degradation.
Human Impacts on the Temperate Forest Biome
Human impact on temperate forests can be categorized into several key areas, including deforestation, urban sprawl, agriculture, and pollution. Deforestation is perhaps the most visible impact, where large areas of forest are cleared for timber or to make way for agricultural land. As mentioned by Foster et al. (2020), conversion of these ecosystems disrupts habitats and leads to a decline in biodiversity.
Urban sprawl has introduced impervious surfaces to the biome, which has altered natural water drainage patterns, contributing to increased flooding and erosion (McMahon et al., 2018).
