Assignment Sheet: HUMA 2319 – Major Essay Format: • Typed, 12pt Times Ne
Throughout this semester, you have been building a foundation of information about various cultures, identities, & issues. This should hopefully also have given you an idea for a "call to action" – a desire to stand/speak up for or work to improve living conditions for the minority group you wrote about. Your Major Essay requires that you attempt to solve a current or enduring issue for a specific minority group. You will use research to support your claims, identify the problem, offer a well-thought-out solution, & argue for its implementation.
Some examples of possible issues that could be addressed: for an LGBT community focus, areas such as media representation, legal issues like access to bathrooms, conversion therapy, or adoption challenges. For African American communities, topics could include voter suppression or police violence. You are free to choose any issue that you feel passionate about, as a "call to action" is more than an argument; it is a philosophy of the humanities and being humane.
To complete this assignment, you must: 1. Define & identify the minority group (do not address multiple groups); outline the major parts of your essay. 2. Address, describe, & explain a specific problem faced by the group. 3. Offer a clear solution and how it will benefit the group and society. 4. Argue why addressing this issue matters and how it benefits both the group and America at large. Support your claims with valid reasoning, examples, critical thinking, and the research requirements listed below.
Paper For Above instruction
The goal of this essay is to analyze a significant issue faced by a specific minority group, propose a tangible solution, and advocate for its implementation based on thorough research and critical analysis. Selecting a minority group that you are genuinely interested in will allow you to craft a compelling "call to action" that emphasizes humanistic values and societal progress. The structure of the paper will include an introduction with a clear thesis statement, several developed body paragraphs, and a conclusive ending that highlights the importance of the proposed solution for both the community in question and society at large.
In the introduction, set the context for your discussion, hooking the reader’s interest with a relevant fact or statement, and clearly articulate your argument. Your thesis should specify what problem you are addressing, the significance of this issue, and your proposed solution. For example, if focusing on police violence against minorities, your thesis could argue that training law enforcement officers to recognize and counter implicit biases can reduce violence and foster trust in law enforcement agencies.
The body paragraphs should systematically develop your points, beginning with defining the minority group—explaining their membership criteria and background. Next, identify and explain a specific problem they face—such as systemic discrimination, legal obstacles, or social marginalization—and present credible evidence supported by scholarly sources, statistics, or case studies. When proposing solutions, be specific about the steps involved, whether legislative reforms, public awareness campaigns, educational initiatives, or policy changes. Discuss why these solutions are practical, effective, and ethically sound.
Throughout the paper, incorporate at least four credible sources, integrating quotes and paraphrases with proper MLA in-text citations to strengthen your argument. Use these sources to provide background information, support your claims, or introduce counterarguments, demonstrating critical engagement with existing literature. The paper should thoroughly cite all references, formatted according to MLA guidelines, in a Works Cited page at the end.
The conclusion should synthesize your main points without merely repeating them and emphasize the broader significance of your proposal. Address the “so what?” factor—why is solving this problem crucial for societal progress and justice? Discuss how addressing the issue aligns with humanistic values and the ethical obligation to improve lives.
Maintain an academic tone throughout, with clear, concise language, proper spelling, and grammar. Avoid vague or colloquial expressions, and focus on building a logical, persuasive argument rooted in research and thoughtful analysis. Your essay should be approximately 1500 words, well-organized into multiple paragraphs, and demonstrate effective editing and planning.
