CAREER PROFILE PERSONAL STATEMENT 1 Career Profile Personal Statement School Name Date Personal Statement 1. How does the law impact your current workplace and/or position? Currently, I work part-time as a client service professional at H&R Block, a team member at Arby's restaurant, and a patient care assistant at an establishment for the elderly. In those positions, it is mandatory for me as an employee to maintain and uphold professional ethics, and adhere to all rules and regulations of those organizations. In each position, I obtain basic understanding of the laws within the company. However, I am willing to seek additional knowledge of laws in which I am oblivious to. As a client service professional, I have gained basic knowledge on legal issues by handling confidential files. It is imperative as a client service professional to be fully aware of all the legal consequences of breaching the duty of confidentiality. In addition, my work in this position has enriched my knowledge of various legal issues through the daily experience of interacting with clients from diverse backgrounds and different tax situations.

My experience as a team member working at Arby’s has further exposed me to important employment laws including the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which regulates minimum wage, overtime pay, and recordkeeping obligations; the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), which ensures workplace safety and health standards; and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which enforces laws against workplace discrimination. Adherence to these laws is essential for maintaining a lawful and equitable environment at work. For example, the FLSA protects employees from unfair labor practices and ensures they are compensated appropriately for their work hours. OSHA laws require employers to provide safe working conditions, preventing workplace injuries and illnesses. The EEOC prohibits discrimination based on race, gender, age, or disability, promoting equal employment opportunities. Learning and complying with these legal requirements are crucial for my role and for contributing to a fair workplace culture.

Working as a patient care assistant in an elderly establishment also involves understanding the importance of legal compliance, particularly regarding elder abuse laws. It is essential to document any incidents on the incident report form and report them immediately to supervisors. Laws against elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation are vital in protecting vulnerable senior citizens. Abuse can include physical, emotional, or financial harm, and legal frameworks are in place to safeguard their rights. Additionally, healthcare regulations and laws such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) are critical in maintaining patients’ confidentiality and privacy. These legal standards guide my daily responsibilities and ensure the dignity and safety of elderly residents are upheld.

Conclusion

Through my various roles, I have gained substantial exposure to legal matters and social justice issues within society. Understanding the legal frameworks governing employment, health care, confidentiality, and elder protection helps me perform my duties ethically and responsibly. Moreover, awareness of legal issues enhances my ability to advocate for clients and colleagues while adhering to social justice principles. This ongoing legal knowledge formation is integral to my personal and professional development, fostering a commitment to ethical conduct in diverse work environments.

How will an understanding of the law and/or US legal system benefit your career track?

Understanding the legal system of the United States is fundamental for my career trajectory, especially as I aspire to become a Juvenile Court Counselor or a juvenile defense attorney. Comprehending legal principles, court procedures, and statutory regulations enables me to navigate the legal landscape proficiently, respond to cases confidently, and make informed decisions. Knowledge of what is legally acceptable within the juvenile justice system ensures I uphold the rights of minors while adhering to the law. It also helps in effectively communicating legal concepts to clients, colleagues, and the court, fostering trust and credibility. Furthermore, understanding the US legal system provides a solid foundation to advocate for social justice, ensure compliance with legal standards, and contribute meaningfully to juvenile rehabilitation and protection.

What are your plans for using the MSL in your current position or your desired future workplace?

The maxim "knowledge is power" resonates deeply with my aspirations. The Masters of Studies in Law (MSL) degree will significantly enhance my legal acumen, making me more effective in both current and future roles. In my current position as a client service professional, the MSL will deepen my understanding of client confidentiality laws under the US legal system, improving my ability to handle sensitive information responsibly and ethically. This advanced legal knowledge will also provide clarity on liability issues related to premises law and tort claims, equipping me to prevent potential legal conflicts at the workplace. As a team member in a fast-food restaurant, understanding premise liability and related tort laws will enable me to recognize hazards, prevent accidents, and ensure compliance with safety standards. Moreover, in my role in an elderly care setting, the MSL will improve my grasp of state-specific healthcare laws, long-term care regulations, and elder rights, helping me provide better care within legal boundaries. Ultimately, this legal expertise will support my ambition to succeed as a Juvenile Court Counselor or Juvenile Defense Attorney by equipping me with the nuanced understanding of laws, regulations, and court procedures necessary for effective advocacy and legal practice.
