Start by researching a business code of ethics or code of conduct for an organization you are familiar with. For instance, I found a 22-page document for the Lowe’s “Code of Business Conduct and Ethics†and an 84-page document for the St Ambrose “Universal Manual for Faculty & Administrative Staff.†Also, review the “Ethics Code Guidelines†in Table 4.2 on page 131 of our textbook.

For this application paper, you are to craft an academic paper that addresses the following: Identify the organization whose code you found, and explain why you chose that organization. Using the guidelines from Table 4.2, describe how well your selected code seems to adhere to the guidelines. If there are points that you cannot asses, such as whether ideas for the code came from all levels of the organization, simply omit that/those items. Offer your own analysis of the code you selected. For instance, you might address whether you think the code is an accurate reflection of the culture for the organization.

This paper examines the code of ethics of Lowe’s Companies Inc., a major retail home improvement store chain, which I selected due to its prominence in the industry and its publicly accessible code of conduct. My goal is to analyze how well Lowe’s code adheres to established ethical guidelines, assess its reflection of corporate culture, and evaluate whether such a code influences organizational integrity and employee commitment.

Organization Selection and Rationale

Lowe’s was chosen because of its significant presence in the retail sector and the transparency it maintains through its published ethics policies. As a consumer and observer of corporate practices, I believe examining Lowe’s code offers insight into how a well-established corporation codifies its ethical commitments and how these commitments translate into operational practices. Additionally, Lowe’s reputation for customer service and community involvement prompted interest in understanding whether its code reflects its broader corporate culture.

Overall Reaction to the Code

The code effectively communicates core values, although more concrete procedures would enhance its enforceability.

Having reviewed Lowe’s code, I would consider working there because the company demonstrates a strong commitment to ethical principles and community involvement. The emphasis on integrity and respect aligns with my personal values, making it an appealing organization to be part of. Nevertheless, my willingness would also depend on the actual organizational climate and how ethically behaviors are upheld in practice.

Conclusion

Codes of ethics are crucial for setting organizational standards and shaping workplace culture. Lowe’s Code of Business Conduct and Ethics exemplifies many best practices by clearly articulating core values and compliance expectations.
