Identify a scenario where you and someone else are approaching a problem or decision from opposite perspectives. How might you reconcile this?

My principal received an invitation for two teachers within the electives department, preferably Business and Technology, to attend the Broward College Aviation Awareness workshop. I was tasked, along with a Civil Air Patrol teacher, to attend the workshop. Broward College launched a career awareness project with goals including bridging the gap between middle schools and the aviation industry, exposing students to aviation career opportunities, and introducing Broward College's Aviation Institute while exploring various airlines for hands-on experience and job descriptions.

According to Chin & Trimble (2015), leadership is influenced by communication. To achieve the project's goals, collaboration was essential. I took the initiative to propose a program called "Aviation Opportunity Career Awareness Program" at Crystal Lake Middle School, aiming to expose students to aviation careers, involve them in field trips, and hear from industry professionals at the workshop.

Ms. Cohen, a Civil Air Patrol teacher, suggested implementing "Dress for Success" days, where students participating in Civil Air Patrol would wear uniforms, and business students would dress professionally. These days served as opportunities for students to learn about the industry while enhancing their self-image and professionalism, aligning with Chin and Trimble's goals of instructional, relational, and identity management goals (2015).

We collaborated to invite guest speakers, including Ken Richards from Spirit Airlines, Mike Nonnemacher from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and Broward College's Dean of Transportation Programs, Russell McCaffery. Their presentations provided students with insights into various departments, career paths, and salary scales within the industry. Field trips to Broward College's Aviation Institute and Spirit Airlines' training center took place, where students engaged in tours and simulation activities; these experiences expanded their understanding of aviation careers beyond traditional pilot and air traffic control roles.

Mr. Nonnemacher's presentation emphasized the importance of education for diverse roles within aviation, highlighting options for students with different academic backgrounds, including those with advanced degrees in unrelated fields like business administration. This comprehensive exposure aimed to bridge the gap between students' perceptions and the realities of aviation careers, supporting the idea of diverse perspectives fostering more innovative solutions (Chin & Trimble, 2015).

Overall, the collaborative efforts of myself and Ms. Cohen exemplify how differing perspectives—mine focusing on business integration and hers on military discipline—can combine effectively. The program has broadened students' horizons regarding aviation opportunities, demonstrating the value of teamwork rooted in communication, mutual respect, and goal alignment. As the pilot school, Crystal Lake Middle intends to expand the program further by involving more aviation professionals for future field trips and guest presentations.
