Global warming is real, and we are starting to feel its effect in our lives today more than ever. Global warming has been identified as the cause of climatic changes the world is experiencing today. The bitter truth, however, is the fact that the global warming we complain about today is caused by human activities such as the burning of fossil such as coal, oil, petroleum which lead to the emission of the greenhouse gas that is carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. The high levels of global warming today have been caused by the increased accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Climate change caused by global warming poses a lot of threats to humankind including the threat of diseases, environmental degradation, and adverse weather conditions, for example, the earthquakes and flooding that has been experienced in various parts of the United States taking away the lives of individuals and destroying property among many other effects. These are the direct effects the globe may experience as a result. Indirectly, climate change causes pressures of resources in the globe leading to resource competition among individuals. This has resulted in degradation of the environment, tension in the society, social and political instability which leads to acts such as terrorism as well as economic burdens among many other effects.
The increased effect of global warming and climate change in the United States at large has led to the call for greater climate control which will be discussed in this paper. Climate control is the attempt to alter the natural climate processes to conditions that suit either an individual or a country at large. For example, using heaters in the house during winter to keep the house warm. Climate control in the United States has been enhanced by the increased levels of technological advances. There are climate control measures used both in a small-scale setting such as in homes and offices and also in large scale setting such as nationally and also in industries.
On small scale levels, we have seen people using air conditioning systems in their homes, their offices, and their cars among other areas to control temperatures. These air conditioning systems are also used in industries a common example using the greenhouse systems to regulate temperatures and humidity to suit what is suitable for crop development (NoAuthorFound, 1994).
In the national scale, we have seen attempts of the government to try and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change by using various technologies to regulate the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the amount of energy that reaches the earth. For example, through geo-engineering which involves the use of technologies to block the sunlight more and suck more carbon dioxide from the air. There are also various technologies being developed that reduce the level of emissions in the atmosphere. However, there is a much-heated debate on the effectiveness of climate controls which are already in use and some of which are still under research such as geoengineering.
Below we are going to evaluate whether or not climate control in the United States and the globe at large is a good or a bad idea. The answer to this question lies on what individuals use the climate control systems for and how they use them. There is a very strong case for climate control today. This is because nature has a way of controlling its own climate and the level of gases in the atmosphere and that is through the ocean and plants. The ocean serves as nature’s climate control system by helping to regulate the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
The oceans are said to store 50 times more carbon dioxide than the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. However, the oceans take time to absorb the greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. For example, research has indicated that the ocean has only been able to absorb and store only 30% of the carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere as a result of human activities for the last 200 years. This means that the ocean climate control system is not highly effective in maintaining good levels of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere at any given time.
Trees also absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to help in their process of photosynthesis but the carbon dioxide absorbed is also in a very small amount that there is no major impact caused by climate change. This means that there is the need for individuals and governments to come up with climate control systems that also help on reducing the level of concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
The government needs to come up with effective and sustainable ways of reducing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. This can be done for example by reducing the levels of carbon dioxide emission in the atmosphere alongside other greenhouse gases. By permanently reducing the level of emission for example by making use of more efficient energy sources such as solar, the concentration of the greenhouse gases would reduce significantly with time thus preventing global warming (Bakker, 1995).
In general, the government needs to come up with climate control systems that help to reduce the level of global warming sustainably, and this can only be done by regulating human activities or making them more effective and efficient. However, there is a major issue arising from the use of climate control systems in the country especially in industries homes, cars as well as offices which has been used to debate against the use of climate control systems. Individuals are working to try and control nature.
The climate control technologies have given individuals the ability to constantly choose the temperature or humidity that works best for them at any given instances whether at home or in the office or the car. Individuals no longer have to worry about prolonged winter seasons since they have air conditioning systems to help keep them warm, in their houses, their cars or offices. The unpredictability of nature caused by global warming is no longer a worry for individuals since they have individual technologies to control the weather however it comes. If it is too hot they have systems to cool down temperatures around their surroundings, if it is too cold, they have technologies to heat up the air surrounding them.
People feel like they have gained success in controlling nature but what these climate control systems are doing is actually alienating us away from nature. They have managed to blind individuals in the effects that various human activities are having on the global climate. The technologically controlled environment has alienated individuals from outdoor climate and kept individuals away from the reality of the climate changes happening around us. This is making efforts to reduce global warming difficult since individuals are not accountable for the activities and the effects they have on the environment.
Furthermore, climate control technologies such as technologies to block sunlight to reduce the amount of energy reaching the sun and those that aim at sucking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere cannot be sustainable if the source of the problem is not addressed that is human activities and high level of greenhouse gases emissions (Fleming, 2010). Furthermore, the increased use of personal climate control systems have led to increased dependency and demand for energy. As the country pushes to produce more energy to meet the demand more damage is done to the environment and climate.
The increased use of the simple personal automatic climate control gadgets though has to have a very major impact on climate change control efforts, and therefore we cannot ignore the use of these systems even at the household level (Dickirson, 2012).
From the literature described above, it is clear that there is the need for climate controlling the United States and the globe. However, climate control systems need to be effective and also sustainable in solving climate change issues that are affecting the globe today. There is the need for both social as well as political will not to control nature but instead to put in place systems that would reduce the level of global warming. The efforts of the government as well as individuals in climate control.
All individuals need to be involved in implementing systems that reduce the level of emissions they make for example by adopting more efficient energy sources. In general, the use of climate control systems by individuals should not distract them from the main mission of restoring proper outdoor climate systems. While the government develops policies and technologies that reduce the emission of greenhouse gases hence reducing global warming, individuals, on the other hand, need to be responsible and work with the government in helping reduce global warming and a stable climate system.
In general, it is more sustainable to put in place controls that sustainably restore a stable outdoor climate system other than using controls for rather selfish indoor climate control. The government needs to invest in sustainable climate control systems most importantly because they have a responsibility of preventing the direct and indirect effects of global warming.
