Part 1: Answer the following questions in your presentation: Define culture, define cultural equity, provide three personal cultural identifiers, which cultural identifier do you identify with most and why, list two stereotypes about your individual culture and explain how it makes you feel, explain an experience with a client from a culture other than your own, explain what did/can you do to make this client feel respected/accepted? Define microaggression and provide three examples, briefly explain a time that microaggression was personally experienced, define microinsult and provide three examples, briefly provide a time that a microinsult was personally experienced, and address strategies to overcome microaggressions and microinsults. Use support of the literature.

Part 2: Select ONE topic under ‘Culture topics’; you may select an unlisted cultural option; this option must be approved by the clinical instructor. Based on your chosen ‘Culture topic’, identify, research and discuss traditional customs and rituals including stereotype challenges, antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum. A minimum of two references must be used with at least ONE scholarly nursing article or textbook published within the past five years.

For the purpose of this project, I identify with the following three cultural identifiers: 1) Hispanic heritage, 2) immigrant background, and 3) bilingualism. Moreover, creating a safe space for patients of diverse backgrounds to express their concerns can empower them to voice their experiences without fear of judgment (Holliday, 2020). It is crucial to address bias at institutional levels to ensure that care is equitable and respectful.

Exploring Cultural Topics

As I chose to focus on Hispanic culture, I researched traditional customs and rituals particularly surrounding childbirth. In Hispanic cultures, familial support during the antepartum period is regarded as essential, providing emotional and practical assistance. During the intrapartum phase, practices such as the "cuarentena," a 40-day period of rest following childbirth, are observed to help mothers recuperate (Rubio, 2018). In the postpartum phase, cultural rituals often include gathering family and friends to celebrate the birth, emphasizing communal support and connection.
