Leaders who cultivate self-awareness demonstrate a clear understanding of their emotions and the effects these have on decision-making, relationships, and team dynamics.
An illustrative example of self-awareness in leadership is when I worked with a manager who openly acknowledged her tendency toward impatience during high-stress situations. She shared her feelings with the team and actively sought feedback to manage her reactions better. Her self-awareness allowed her to regulate her emotions, which fostered trust and openness within the team. Because she recognized her emotional triggers, she communicated more effectively, creating a calm atmosphere that encouraged collaboration and accountability (Boyatzis & McKee, 2005).
This leader’s self-awareness positively influenced my own behavior by modeling emotional regulation and transparency.
