According to the textbook (pages 58-63), several barriers can obstruct effective communication, with two prominent ones being language differences and emotional barriers. Reflecting on past writing experiences, I have encountered these barriers firsthand and learned the importance of addressing them to enhance communication.

One significant barrier discussed in the textbook is language differences. This barrier becomes particularly evident when communicators do not share a common language or possess differing levels of proficiency in the language used. Such disparities can lead to misunderstandings, misinterpretations, or incomplete exchanges of information. For instance, in a previous academic paper I wrote, I used complex jargon and technical terms without considering my audience's familiarity with them. As a result, my readers found it challenging to grasp the core message, leading to confusion. To rectify this issue, I should have simplified my language, used clearer definitions of technical terms, and included explanations to make my writing more accessible.

Another noteworthy barrier is emotional barriers, which pertain to feelings that inhibit open and honest communication. These include fear, mistrust, or defensiveness, which can cause individuals to withhold information or respond negatively to messages. Reflecting on a past instance, I recall writing an argumentative essay where I was emotionally attached to my position. My bias led me to dismiss opposing views outright, which compromised the objectivity of my writing. To address this, I should have acknowledged differing perspectives more openly, maintained a balanced tone, and been receptive to feedback, which would have fostered a more constructive dialogue.

In recognizing these barriers, I also identified the importance of developing vocabulary skills to enhance my communication.
