Description/Memoir Final Draft Due: Description of Assignment
Exceptional memoirs use detailed description to convey insight found in significant experiences. The reader wants to know what it was like to be in a certain place during a specific time and how you reacted to problems and people. Think about a place you have been at any point in your life that you particularly enjoyed or perhaps where you felt most like yourself. Or, it can be a place you despised where you didn’t fit in. Think of the people there, what they did, why they made an impression. Consider the culture of the place.
Think of a time in your life that changed who you are. Strong description is achieved through sensory details that appeal to sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell. Use inventive and interesting adjectives and adverbs to bring texture to the essay. While this essay is a memoir, limit your subject to a relatively small period—perhaps a single moment—that can be conveyed in 2-3 pages.
Organization should be spatial and chronological, arranging details by location and in the order events happened. Present details in a way that creates the greatest impact, with significant details toward the end. The first paragraph should introduce the central impression and situation, providing background on the place and people and why they are memorable. Your thesis statement should emphasize what you want your audience to think or feel about the subject and should be the last sentence of your introduction.
The body should reinforce the central impression using descriptive language and sensory details, with transitions emphasizing spatial organization. The last paragraph should include final reflections on why the place, people, or events are important, what you learned, and why it has stayed with you.
You must incorporate five vocabulary words from the Writing Basics handout (bolded in your final draft), at least three similes or metaphors, a variety of sentence starters, and appeal to at least three different senses.

The summer of 2019 marked an extraordinary chapter in my life, a journey into the heart of Dubai that deeply transformed my perspective and sense of self. Among the many unforgettable sights, the towering elegance of the Burj Khalifa remains etched in my memory, a monumental symbol of human achievement and ambition. As I prepared for the ascent, I felt a blend of anticipation and awe, knowing I was about to witness a marvel of modern engineering that seemed to touch the clouds and redefine the skyline of Dubai.
Our journey began at the entrance of the skyscraper, where sleek, automatic sliding doors whispered open, inviting us into a world of cutting-edge technology and grandeur. The warm, inviting ambiance inside contrasted sharply with the bustling city outside. The interior was a vivid display of innovation—immaculate, gleaming surfaces reflected the ambient lights, and the faint aroma of fresh coffee mingled with the scent of polished metal. The elevator system was a marvel unto itself; 58 hydraulically smooth elevators sped through the building, some breaking records by traveling up to 10 meters per second—faster than the eye could track. I felt a thrilling rush as I ascended towards the observation deck, eager to absorb the panoramic vista that awaited me.
Reaching the 124th floor, the anticipation grew. The corridor leading to the observation deck was a corridor of contrasts—a dark, narrow passage with moving images illustrating Dubai’s transformation from humble beginnings to a dazzling metropolis. Stepping onto the observation deck, I was overwhelmed by the breathtaking view—a sprawling landscape of glittering lights and modern architecture spread beneath a vast blue sky. Through electronic telescopes, I watched the city shimmer like a jewel, each detail vivid and pronounced. Below, the Address hotel stood regal, its sleek façade a testament to contemporary elegance, while adjacent highways twisted like ribbons of light across the desert terrain.
The sensory experience was heightened by the gentle breeze brushing my face and the distant hum of helicopters overhead. The atmosphere was invigorating—akin to standing on the edge of the world, yet grounded in the vibrant reality below. As I gazed, I felt a kinship with the city’s relentless pursuit of innovation, a dynamic metaphor for human ingenuity. The view was not merely visual but a symphony of sights, sounds, and textures that ignited my curiosity and admiration.
Descending to the Dubai Fountain nearby, the spectacle of synchronized water and light was a dazzling delight. Over 900 feet long, the fountain’s jets shot water into the air, choreographed to music with stunning precision, creating an almost surreal scene. The water shimmered under the glow of over 6,000 WET lights and 25 color projectors—a symphony of color and movement, like a painter’s palette brought to life. The cool mist kissed my skin, and the rhythmic roar of water was like nature’s own orchestra, intensifying the feeling of awe. This spectacle underscored Dubai’s innovative spirit and its desire to constantly push boundaries.
Our next stop was Burj Khalifa Park, an oasis of serenity amid the city's modern chaos. Covering 27 acres, it boasted intricate water features, lush gardens, and palm-lined walkways. Walking barefoot on the soft grass, I felt a deep connection to nature—a stark contrast to the steel and glass of the skyscraper. The scent of blooming flowers and fresh greenery surrounded me, grounding the expansive cityscape in sensory comfort. The park’s design highlighted thoughtful architecture that incorporated cultural elements and natural beauty, reinforcing my appreciation for the city's blend of tradition and progress.
My entire experience was a profound realization of human potential—the towering spire of the Burj Khalifa, the mesmerizing dance of water at the fountain, and the tranquility of the park collectively conveyed a message: possibility is limitless when innovation is paired with vision. This journey not only broadened my understanding of architecture but also ignited a renewed sense of ambition within me. The vibrant sights, captivating sounds, and fragrant air combined to create a holistic sensory tapestry that stays vivid in my mind, reminding me that with determination, seemingly impossible dreams can become reality.
In conclusion, my visit to Dubai, especially the experience atop the Burj Khalifa, was transformative. It demonstrated to me the power of human creativity and perseverance. These landmarks are more than feats of engineering; they are symbols of hope, resilience, and endless possibility. I hope others will witness these wonders, too, to experience firsthand the extraordinary interplay of innovation and culture that Dubai exemplifies. This adventure has left an indelible mark on my life, inspiring me to pursue my own dreams with renewed vigor and a broader perspective.
