Creating Your Plan
Each of the categories below prompts reflection on the topics covered in the University Orientation Seminar. Write a 1–2 paragraph summary for each category detailing your plan based on what you've learned. Use the guiding questions to help frame your responses.
Area 1: Goals and Mindset
What are your personal and professional goals related to pursuing your degree? Consider what changes you want to see in your career after completing your degree and identify additional steps beyond earning your degree that could support your success. Reflect on how cultivating a growth mindset will help you overcome challenges and stay motivated throughout your academic journey.
My plan for achieving my goals and maintaining a growth mindset: I aim to set clear, attainable objectives aligned with my career aspirations, such as gaining specific skills or certifications. I will adopt a growth mindset by viewing challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, embracing feedback, and staying resilient when obstacles arise. Regularly reflecting on my progress and adjusting my strategies will keep me focused and motivated as I work toward completing my degree.
Area 2: Academic Resources
This Orientation highlighted various resources to support academic success, such as tutoring services, writing centers, and library access. Building upon these, I will utilize the university's academic support services, including digital library resources, online workshops, and peer tutoring, to enhance my skills. I plan to engage actively with academic advisors and utilize learning tools provided through the Courseroom, ensuring I stay on track with assignments and develop effective study habits.
My plan for utilizing the resources available to me: I will proactively schedule meetings with academic advisors for guidance, participate in online tutoring and workshops to improve my skills, and leverage library and digital learning tools to support my coursework. I will also connect with peers for study groups to foster collaborative learning, ensuring I make the most of the available academic supports to succeed in my program.
Area 3: Support
Recognizing that balancing responsibilities is crucial, I plan to build a support network comprising family, friends, mentors, and colleagues who understand my academic commitments. They can provide emotional encouragement, assist with responsibilities, and offer practical advice when needed. I will communicate clearly with them about how they can support my efforts, such as helping manage household tasks or providing understanding when I need focused study time. Reaching out and relying on my support network will help me manage my time effectively and reduce stress, allowing me to stay committed to my educational goals.
My plan for building and utilizing my support network: I will identify key individuals who can support my academic journey, such as family members and mentors, and discuss specific ways they can assist me—whether through emotional support, caregiving, or advice. I will schedule regular check-ins to keep them informed of my progress and needs. This network will serve as a foundation of encouragement, helping me stay focused, organized, and balanced throughout my studies.
Area 4: Financial Planning
I have assessed my financial situation and developed a plan for financing my education. I’ve calculated the estimated program costs and explored funding options like employer assistance and scholarships. I completed the necessary paperwork for scholarships and employer support, and I have submitted my FAFSA and Financial Aid Agreement documents to secure federal financial aid. I also completed my Master Promissory Note and am aware of my remaining aid limits. I plan to monitor my financial aid status regularly and stay informed about any additional funding opportunities that may arise.
My plan for financing my education: I will maintain communication with the financial aid office to ensure my aid is properly disbursed and to address any issues promptly. I will keep track of my expenses and remaining aid eligibility to manage my budget effectively. If needed, I will seek additional scholarships or employer support to cover ongoing costs, ensuring I can focus on my coursework without financial stress.
Conclusion
Creating a comprehensive and personalized success plan is vital for navigating the challenges and opportunities of my academic journey. By setting clear goals, leveraging available resources, building a support network, and managing my finances proactively, I am positioning myself for success. This plan not only provides a roadmap for achieving my degree but also fosters a resilient mindset that values growth and continuous learning. As I move forward, I will revisit and refine this plan regularly, keeping my focus sharp and my motivation high, ensuring that I stay aligned with my goals and aspirations throughout my studies and beyond.
