Continuous improvement, also known as Kaizen, has become a cornerstone of modern organizational management, emphasizing an ongoing effort to enhance processes, products, and services (Imai, 1986). The key benefits of implementing a continuous improvement process include increased productivity, higher quality outputs, and enhanced employee engagement. By fostering a culture of consistent evaluation and incremental change, organizations can adapt more swiftly to market shifts and customer demands, leading to competitive advantages (Lalouf & Zammit, 2019). Furthermore, continuous improvement encourages empowering employees at all levels to identify inefficiencies and suggest innovative solutions, which can result in cost savings and improved operational efficiency. However, despite its numerous advantages, there are notable potential drawbacks.
One significant challenge associated with continuous improvement initiatives is the risk of change fatigue among staff, where persistent changes may lead to employee burnout or resistance (Kim & Daekyo, 2020). Additionally, the process requires a substantial commitment of time and resources, which might divert attention from core business activities, especially for organizations with limited capacity. Implementing continuous improvement also involves cultural shifts; if leadership fails to foster an environment that genuinely values employee input, efforts may stagnate or be superficially adopted rather than deeply integrated. Furthermore, an overemphasis on incremental change could potentially hinder radical innovation, which sometimes requires more disruptive approaches rather than gradual adjustments (Liker & Meier, 2021).
