The most successful social welfare program in the United States is arguably Social Security. Established in 1935 during the Great Depression, Social Security has provided financial support to millions of retirees, disabled individuals, and survivors of deceased workers (Klein & Weinstein, 2020). Its success can be attributed to its broad coverage, political bipartisan support, and its role in reducing elderly poverty. Social Security's primary strength lies in its universal applicability, ensuring a safety net for vulnerable populations regardless of income level, which has contributed significantly to alleviating poverty among the elderly (Munnell, 2018).

Historically, Social Security evolved from a modest pension program to a comprehensive social insurance system, adapting over time to demographic changes and economic challenges (Levine & Scarf, 2019). Its durability is evidenced by its longevity and broad public support, making it a cornerstone of the American welfare state. However, its weaknesses include concerns about long-term financial sustainability due to demographic shifts such as increased longevity and lowered birth rates, leading to a shrinking workforce base funding the system (Obergefell, 2021).

Additionally, some argue that the program's current structure does not sufficiently address inequalities, as benefits are linked to earnings and work history, which disadvantages marginalized groups with interrupted employment histories (Smith & Johnson, 2020).
