The purpose is to analyze effective practices, propose strategies for future implementation, and reflect on the influence of classroom management techniques on fostering an inclusive and productive learning environment.
Observations from the videos highlighted several classroom management rules and strategies employed by teachers to promote order, engagement, and respect. For example, in the video of the first-grade literacy lesson (“Literacy Lesson First Grade”), the teacher utilized positive reinforcement by praising students who answered questions correctly, thereby encouraging active participation and confidence (Mr. A, 2016). Likewise, in the third-grade reading class (“Teaching Character Traits”), the teacher distributed charts to foster collaboration, which supported student engagement and analytical thinking (Revolve Learning, 2017). The kindergarten phonics lesson (“Kindergarten Writing Lesson”) demonstrated the use of visual aids and recall techniques by employing flashcards and encouraging students to connect prior knowledge with new concepts (Peoria Unified C&I, 2017). Additionally, I would utilize praise strategically to recognize positive behaviors and participation, which motivates students to engage actively and develop self-regulation skills (Finley, 2016).
Drawing from personal observations and discussions with educators, I believe that effective classroom management strategies significantly impact teaching success and student achievement. Techniques such as establishing routines, fostering positive relationships, and promoting inclusive participation create an environment where all students feel valued and motivated. For example, in my observation of Ms. Hubbard’s class, asking students about recent tests and activities encouraged participation, although some students appeared fatigued, possibly due to remote learning stress. Such engagement strategies could be enhanced by incorporating varied activities and checking in with students individually to address emotional and academic needs (Finley, 2016). To avoid ineffective strategies, I plan to steer clear of punitive discipline methods like shouting or harsh reprimands, which can erode trust and increase student anxiety. Instead, I aim to employ conflict resolution through calm dialogue and understanding, fostering mutual respect (Terada, 2019).
Furthermore, I would emphasize consistency in enforcing classroom rules and provide positive reinforcement to create a secure and motivating environment. Recognizing gifted learners’ contributions, such as peer tutoring, not only boosts their confidence but also encourages supportive classroom dynamics (Revolve Learning, 2017). To address diverse cultural backgrounds, I would employ culturally responsive teaching practices, including respecting different communication styles and integrating diverse cultural contents, ensuring all students feel represented and respected (Hammond, 2015).
In conclusion, the classroom management principles learned through observation and coursework are essential tools for creating an inclusive, engaging, and effective learning environment. By establishing clear rules, fostering positive relationships, and adapting strategies to individual student needs, future teachers can promote both academic success and social-emotional well-being. Preventing ineffective methods, such as punitive discipline or inconsistent enforcement, is equally important in maintaining a respectful and supportive classroom atmosphere.
