Describe your reasons for choosing the topic. The topic that I have chosen is Mental Health Awareness Among High School Students. This subject is more pertinent today because adolescents are increasingly struggling with mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and social isolation, especially in the post COVID-19 era. Students must be provided with a framework to manage these issues as they significantly impact their academic performance and wellbeing. With a problem-centered approach to curriculum on this topic, students can develop the capacity to identify and demonstrate an understanding of mental health as an area of need in society alongside active participation in solutions.

Describe your knowledge of the topic. I have a basic understanding of the importance of mental health in schools, supported by recent educational research and articles. My understanding is based on a needs analysis that highlighted prevalent issues, the school ecosystem, and the need for action. To deepen my mastery, I will explore scientific databases, attend relevant workshops, and engage with teachers and psychologists. I aim to stay informed about current studies, especially regarding the state of mental health services for adolescents post-COVID-19 and the efficacy of school-based interventions.

Describe your understanding of the participants and stakeholders. This curriculum targets high school students in a diverse, suburban Kansas district. The student body is ethnically varied, with many showing signs of mental health challenges due to academic and social demands. Major stakeholders include teachers, school counselors, parents, and administrators. Teachers and counselors directly influence classroom and counseling approaches, whereas parents and administrators support through participation and funding.

Describe the elements of your concept map. The main topic is Mental Health Awareness, integrated into the school curriculum to foster observation skills and promote discourse about mental health, creating a supportive environment (Barker, 2023). Related issues include: Social Isolation and Peer Relationships, addressing peer exclusion and social support; Academic Pressure and Mental Health, exploring stress from school demands and strategies to alleviate it; Role of School Staff and Parents, emphasizing their involvement in students' mental health; Effects of COVID-19, focusing on pandemic-related stress and resilience-building; and Mental Health Curriculum Integration, embedding mental health strategies into daily learning.

Develop three objectives and three outcomes using Bloom’s taxonomy. Objectives:

  1. Students will identify signs and symptoms of mental health issues in themselves and peers, empowering early recognition and intervention.
  2. Students will analyze how academic pressure and social isolation influence mental well-being, fostering critical thinking and resilience.
  3. Students will create personal wellness plans incorporating stress management strategies, applying learned coping mechanisms.

Outcomes:

  1. Students will demonstrate understanding by sharing mental health resources with peers, promoting peer support and awareness.
  2. Students will evaluate their own stressors and select effective coping strategies, demonstrating self-management skills.
  3. Students will apply wellness strategies during real-life situations such as exams or social interactions, reinforcing practical application for sustained mental health benefits.
