This paper is an argument paper. In this paper you will take a position on your topic (the same topic as paper 3) and will craft an argument for that position. You need a clear thesis that appears on the first page and is reasoned, explained, developed, and defended throughout the paper.

You will organize your paper with the following sections: Introduction, Narration (history), Confirmation (defense of argument) with reasons and support, Refutation, and Conclusion.

Research requirements include a works cited/references page with at least 8 sources (including at least 1 academic source) and a formal bibliography with at least 10 consulted sources. Proper citation and formatting are necessary, with penalties for errors and insufficient sources.

The mechanics of writing must be accurate, especially in the use of commas, sentence structure, coherence, and transitions. Fragments and mechanical errors will result in point deductions. Visit the writing center if needed.

Parts of a Full Argument

In classical rhetoric, arguments are arranged with parts that build on each other to persuade. Modern rhetors also use these parts, whether consciously or not. Your paper must include all of these parts, in bold:

• Introduction (Exordium): Establish urgency and importance (EXIGENCE), introduce the topic, and build ethos. Use facts, questions, or paradoxes to engage the reader.
• Narration (Narratio): Provide background or history of the issue, creating context for the debate, whether or not your audience is already familiar with the topic.
• Story or Example: Include a representative, documented example that supports your argument, woven into the narrative or support sections.
• Partition (Partitio): Narrow down the issue, preview the supporting points without revealing too much detail.
• Confirmation (Confirmatio): Present and defend your reasons supporting your thesis, with evidence, explanations, and clear connections between ideas.
• Refutation (Refutatio): Acknowledge major opposing concerns and address them effectively, weakening their support without merely opposing their case.
• Conclusion (Peroratio): Summarize key points, reinforce the stake in the debate, and potentially suggest next steps or actions for the reader.

Each part serves a rhetorical purpose to persuade and build clarity in your argument. Your paper should demonstrate mastery of these parts with clear organization, strong reasoning, and cohesive writing.
