For this analysis, I selected the South Korean online news platform Naver News to examine how South Korean press perceives and critiques global leaders, focusing specifically on President Joe Biden of the United States. South Korea’s media generally contextualizes international leaders within the frameworks of diplomatic alliance, economic partnership, and regional stability. Articles featured on Naver highlighted President Biden’s efforts to strengthen U.S.-South Korea relations, emphasizing his diplomatic skills, strategic patience, and commitment to security—traits aligned with GLOBE’s “Competence” and “Humility” leadership behaviors. South Korean coverage tends to praise Biden’s ability to maintain stability and foster alliance cohesion, reflecting a cultural appreciation for hierarchical respect and harmonious relationship management.
The critique of Biden often centers around the challenges of balancing assertiveness with diplomacy, echoing the GLOBE leadership dimension of “Autonomy,” which emphasizes self-confidence and independent decision-making in leaders (House et al., 2004).
