For This Assignment You Will Create A Newspaper Article That Highligh

For this assignment, you will create a newspaper article that highlights the experiences of something “different” than your own experience or way of viewing the world. Consider an issue, an identity, or difference that makes you uncomfortable, is something that you are not familiar with, or just something you want to know more about. Identify a person or persons (family or couple) who has this “difference” that would be willing to share with you about their experiences. The person, family, or couple that you pick is open-ended. Maybe it is someone with a different belief system, maybe it is a couple of a different background than you, maybe it is someone who grew up in a different country, the possibilities are endless (Note: In friend or family circles, it is likely you could identify a difference that would fit for this assignment, also, you could contact a local organization and see if there is someone who would be willing – e.g., LGBTQ+ community centers, places of worship, political centers, etc.).

Make sure the person or persons that you are interviewing are aware that you are doing an assignment that challenges you to look at differences and present your reflections on these differences. Be prepared with questions and directions so that you do not take up too much of their time (try to limit to 20 minutes). Remember, be open and curious. Some themes that you will explore in the interview: Their background (exploring that “difference”). The elements of their identity that they are most passionate about. Intersectionality and the influence in their life. Challenges they have experienced. Rewards (strengths) related to that “difference”. In the interview space, be prepared with questions. You do not need to record the interview, but taking notes is a good idea.

Remember, you are there to listen to their story and appreciate them. Your newspaper article will highlight the themes noted above. Please integrate your story with at least two scholarly references. Include a brief reflection (1 page) of the experience of learning about this person or persons and the impact it might have on you as a therapist. Length: 3-5 pages. References: Include a minimum of 2 scholarly resources.

The assignment entails creating a thoughtfully composed newspaper article that focuses on the experiences of an individual, couple, or family who embodies a difference from the writer’s own background, perspective, or comfort zone. This task aims to foster empathy, broaden understanding of diverse identities, and examine the influence of intersectionality on personal experiences. The selected interviewee should be someone willing to share their story within a limited timeframe—approximately 20 minutes—allowing for open dialogue and thoughtful reflection.

Developing the article begins with establishing rapport and gaining permission—being transparent about the purpose of exploring differences relative to the writer’s personal growth and knowledge. The interview questions should be carefully prepared, targeting key themes such as the individual’s background, elements of their identity they value most, experiences shaped by intersectionality, challenges faced, and strengths or rewards gained through their differences.

After conducting the interview, the writer should craft a narrative that highlights these themes while demonstrating respect and genuine curiosity. In addition to storytelling, the article must incorporate at least two scholarly references that explore issues related to identity, cultural differences, intersectionality, or related topics. These references provideacademic grounding for the reflections and insights shared.

Furthermore, a one-page reflective section must accompany the article. This reflection should articulate what was learned from the experience, how it changed or reinforced the writer’s perspectives, and contemplate its implications for future therapeutic practice. Overall, the final submission should be a comprehensive, well-organized, and empathetic portrayal of another’s experiences with integrated scholarly support, totaling 3 to 5 pages.

Creating a newspaper article that highlights the experiences of someone with a different background or identity provides a valuable opportunity for personal and professional growth. This exercise encourages active listening, cultural humility, and critical reflection—traits essential for effective therapy and social understanding. By interviewing a person willing to share their story openly, the writer can gain insights into how differences shape experiences, influence relationships, and contribute to resilience.

In constructing the article, it is important to approach the subject with respect and curiosity, avoiding stereotypes or assumptions. Incorporating scholarly literature supports a nuanced understanding of the themes discussed, such as identity, social marginalization, and the positive aspects of embracing diversity. The reflective component further solidifies learning, guiding future therapeutic attitudes and approaches.

This assignment ultimately fosters a deeper awareness of societal diversity and enhances empathetic engagement—skills that are critically important in multicultural and inclusive counseling contexts. Proper organization, clear writing, and adherence to the page length ensure that the final work is both impactful and academically rigorous.
