This paper examines different network types—Personal Area Network (PAN), Local Area Network (LAN), Wireless Area Network (WAN), and Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)—and identifies the two most suitable options, exploring reasons for their selection and the consequences of inadequate network design.

Overview of Network Types

A Personal Area Network (PAN) is a network primarily used for connecting personal devices within a very limited area, typically within a person's proximity, such as Bluetooth-enabled devices. Its scope is limited, but it provides essential connectivity for personal gadgets. A Local Area Network (LAN) connects computers within a confined space, such as an office building or a campus, offering high data transfer rates and low latency, essential for day-to-day operations (Kim et al., 2018).

Wireless Area Networks (WAN) cover extensive geographical areas, often linking multiple LANs over large distances through wireless connections, facilitating remote access and mobile connectivity (Shah et al., 2019). Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) bridge the gap between LAN and WAN by covering urban or metropolitan regions, supporting city-wide data transmission and integrated city services (Kumar & Singh, 2020).

Selection of Network Types

Given the critical role of reliable networks in business operations, I would select LAN and WAN as the two most vital network types for assessment and deployment.

Local Area Network (LAN)

The LAN is fundamental for internal organizational operations due to its high speed, security, and efficiency in connecting devices within a confined area. It supports activities such as file sharing, internal communication, and access to centralized resources like printers and servers. Its reliability ensures minimal downtime, which is essential for maintaining productivity (Haigh et al., 2017).

Wireless Area Network (WAN)

The WAN is indispensable for connecting geographically dispersed offices, remote employees, and international branches. Wireless WAN solutions facilitate mobile access and flexibility, empowering employees to work from remote locations. The flexibility and scalability of WANs also enable businesses to expand without significant infrastructure overhauls (Jain & Singh, 2021).

Impact of Poor Network Design

Poorly designed networks can have devastating consequences for individuals and organizations. For individuals, unreliable networks lead to frustration, decreased productivity, and potential security vulnerabilities. For businesses, the impact of poor network design manifests in frequent outages, data breaches, reduced operational efficiency, and increased costs due to troubleshooting and downtime (Lee et al., 2018).

An ineffective network can hinder communication between departments, delay critical transactions, and compromise sensitive data. For example, inadequate security protocols within poorly configured networks can lead to cyber-attacks, which may result in financial loss and damage to reputation (Al-Qudah et al., 2020). Moreover, in emergency situations, network failures can prevent vital communications, risking safety and operational continuity.
