Introduction
In selecting a target population for my research project, I have chosen to focus on adolescents diagnosed with depression. This demographic is particularly salient given the rising prevalence of adolescent depression in recent years, and my aspiration is to contribute to improved treatment strategies for this vulnerable group. Understanding their demographic profile, common problems, strengths, and growth areas will lay a solid foundation for exploring effective interventions.
Demographics of the Target Population
Adolescents with depression typically range from ages 13 to 18 years old, encompassing early to late adolescence. This group is characterized by diverse backgrounds, but common demographic factors include varied socioeconomic statuses, ethnicities, and family structures. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH, 2021), depression affects approximately 13% of adolescents in the United States, with a higher prevalence among females than males. School performance, social relationships, and family dynamics significantly influence their mental health status. Many of these adolescents are in school settings, balancing academic demands with social development. Family support levels vary widely, impacting their resilience and treatment outcomes.
Problems Faced and Related Strengths and Growth Areas
The primary problem faced by adolescents with depression is persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed. They often experience impairments in academic performance, social interactions, and family relationships. Comorbid issues such as anxiety, substance use, and self-harm are also common (Twenge et al., 2019). Despite these challenges, many adolescents exhibit strengths including resilience, supportive peer relationships, and involvement in extracurricular activities. Growth areas include developing emotional regulation skills, improving self-esteem, and enhancing social support networks. Early intervention can harness these strengths while addressing the problematic symptoms.
Treatment options for adolescent depression include psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, and community-based interventions. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) remains the gold standard, helping adolescents restructure negative thought patterns (Weisz et al., 2017). Family therapy also shows promise in improving communication and support within the family unit (Diamond et al., 2014). Antidepressant medications, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), are prescribed cautiously, considering potential side effects and suicide risk (Hammad et al., 2016). Recent advances in technology have introduced app-based and online therapy programs, which can increase accessibility and engagement for adolescents, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic (Hollis et al., 2017).
