Adolescent development is a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and individual construction factors. From the assigned readings, it is evident that genes provide the biological foundation for growth, influencing physical maturation and certain predispositions. However, the environment plays a crucial role in shaping behavioral, cognitive, and emotional development through experiences, social interactions, and cultural contexts. The concept of individual construction emphasizes that adolescents actively interpret and influence their developmental pathways by engaging with their surroundings and internalizing experiences. Therefore, I believe that adolescent development cannot be solely attributed to genetics or environment but results from an intricate combination of these factors, along with the agency of the individual.
Regarding the promotion of adolescent psychological development in secondary schools, I strongly believe that providing students with access to all sources of information is essential. The assigned readings underscore the importance of diverse knowledge sources in fostering critical thinking, autonomy, and informed decision-making among adolescents. When students have access to comprehensive and varied information, they are better equipped to understand themselves, their peers, and the world around them. This exposure promotes cognitive and emotional growth, enabling adolescents to develop resilience, a sense of identity, and moral reasoning. Conversely, restricting access to information could hinder their development and limit their ability to navigate complex social and personal challenges. Therefore, secondary schools should facilitate broad access to information, encouraging curiosity and empowering adolescents to become well-informed individuals.
