The purpose of this paper is to promote sexual self-awareness so that students will be able to counsel and minister ethically as well as knowing (cf. The assignment involves writing a personal narrative that shares your sexual story or journey, starting from your earliest memory through key experiences that shaped your understanding of your sexuality. Your narrative should be written in a continuous, story-like format rather than an outline. Begin with your earliest memories and develop specific situations that influenced your attitudes, beliefs, and feelings about your body, masculinity, femininity, and sex at various stages of life, such as childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.
As you reflect on your sexual history, consider experiences you found challenging or wish could have been different. Your paper may include, but is not limited to, the following themes: relationships and influences that shaped your views (family, peers, culture), messages or incidents that contributed to your attitudes and values, how sexuality was addressed within your family of origin, early sexual experiences and their impact, moments of growth and insight, as well as wounds or unresolved issues needing healing. It is not mandatory to cover all listed points, but use them as prompts to aid your reflection.
Furthermore, connect your personal sexual journey to your current and future role as a pastoral counselor. Reflect on how your experiences influence your approach to counseling individuals with sexual concerns, how comfortable you feel in asking sexual questions, and how your story might serve as a strength or challenge in your ministry. Consider how your understanding of sexuality might impact your ethical responsibilities, empathy, and sensitivity when working with clients experiencing sexual issues.
The paper should be at least eight pages in length, double-spaced, with 12-point Times New Roman font, following APA 6th edition formatting. No abstract is required. The narrative should be written in the first person and in chronological order, focusing on events or experiences with which you feel comfortable sharing. You may choose to highlight positive occurrences or omit negative events if preferred. If you are less comfortable personalizing certain topics, you may focus on societal, media, church, or educational influences, and you may write using third person perspective when appropriate. Citations are not required but may be included if relevant and properly referenced.
