Reflecting on the course on leadership and ethics in healthcare, several topics stand out as particularly beneficial for my future role as a healthcare administrator. Principles related to ethical decision-making, regulatory compliance, patient-centered care, and organizational leadership will be crucial. Understanding ethical frameworks will enable me to address complex moral dilemmas, while leadership strategies such as emotional intelligence and effective communication will help foster a positive organizational environment (Rosenstein & O’Daniel, 2005). Moreover, insights into managing change and building trust within healthcare teams will support the delivery of high-quality care and staff engagement.

Regarding ethical theories, utilitarianism and deontology have provided significant guidance in shaping my leadership approach. Utilitarianism emphasizes the importance of outcomes that maximize overall well-being, which is essential in healthcare where patient safety and quality are paramount (Beauchamp & Childress, 2013). Deontology stresses the importance of duties and adherence to ethical standards, ensuring that decisions respect patient rights and professional responsibilities. These theories collectively influence my leadership style by balancing the need for effective outcomes with ethical integrity.

My understanding of values-based leadership has deepened through this course. I now see it as a leadership approach grounded in core moral values such as honesty, integrity, respect, and compassion. Values-based leadership focuses on fostering an ethical organizational culture that aligns with the shared values of stakeholders, which ultimately improves trust and accountability within healthcare organizations (Caldwell et al., 2012). This perspective encourages transparency and responsibility, essential for effective healthcare management.

The development of a personal career plan was instrumental in preparing me for my healthcare career. It helped clarify my professional goals, identify areas for skill enhancement, and outline strategies for overcoming potential challenges. Having a clear plan increases motivation, provides direction, and ensures intentional growth as I progress toward becoming an influential healthcare leader (Miller et al., 2013). It also encourages continuous learning and adaptation in a dynamic healthcare environment.

The leadership value I found most interesting is trust. Trust is fundamental in healthcare because it influences team cohesion, patient safety, and organizational reputation. Building trust within teams promotes open communication, collaboration, and a shared commitment to organizational goals (Gillespie et al., 2017). Without trust, even the most well-designed policies and processes can fail, making it a cornerstone of effective healthcare leadership. Trust fosters a positive work environment and enhances the capacity for collective problem-solving, which is essential in high-stakes healthcare settings.
