Being born in August has always been a special time for me, marking my birth during a warm summer month. It’s a period associated with sunshine, outdoor activities, and sometimes family gatherings. My birth month reflects a vibrant and energetic personality, and I often feel it influences my approach to work and life — embracing challenges with enthusiasm and optimism.
Informatics, to me, is the integration of information technology with healthcare to improve patient outcomes, streamline processes, and support clinical decision-making. It represents a bridge between data and meaningful action, allowing healthcare professionals to access and analyze patient information efficiently. An example of health informatics in practice is the electronic health record (EHR) system. EHRs enable seamless sharing of patient information among different healthcare providers, ensuring continuity of care, reducing errors, and enhancing communication. For instance, during my time as a crisis nurse during COVID-19, electronic documentation allowed for real-time updates on patient status, medication administration, and vital signs, facilitating rapid decision-making and better coordination among care teams.
What I specifically want to learn in this course is how to leverage informatics tools more effectively to improve patient safety and care quality. I am interested in understanding data analytics, predictive modeling, and how emerging technologies—such as artificial intelligence—can be applied in clinical settings. Gaining deeper insights into these areas will help me incorporate innovative solutions into my practice, ultimately benefiting my patients and the healthcare system as a whole.
