According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (2020), approximately 37% of state prisoners and 44% of jail inmates have a mental health problem. This trend is expected to rise due to various factors, including aging populations and the failure of community-based mental health services. The rising number of inmates with mental health issues significantly impacts prison management and operational efficiency because it demands specialized treatment programs, trained staff, and extra resources, which many facilities are ill-equipped to provide (Lamb & Weinberger, 2021).

This issue also affects safety within correctional facilities, as untreated mental health conditions can lead to violence, self-harm, and behavioral disturbances, complicating daily management efforts (James, 2019). The inadequate provision of mental health care can undermine efforts to maintain order and safety, ultimately impairing the effectiveness of correctional operations. Furthermore, failure to properly address mental health needs may lead to increased recidivism rates, as inmates do not receive the necessary treatment to reintegrate into society successfully (Schnittker & Behrman, 2020).
