The only method I was previously familiar and comfortable with was the root cause analysis, specifically the five why’s, which can be quite redundant and, in some cases, not specific or detailed enough to get to the meat of the problem in order to prevent future occurrences. Although I am currently always accompanied by a more senior safety professional that can guide and mentor me on the job, I now feel confident that if I were to be left in charge of conducting an incident, occupational illness or injury investigation that I would be able to successfully do my job and be able to choose the most appropriate methods for conducting my investigations. I also feel much more confident now when it comes to knowing what is required and what must be done for OSHA reporting. Another valuable part of this course for me was all of the historic moments we discussed that caused certain laws and organizations to come into play. I feel that bringing these up during toolbox talks and mass safety briefings and showing employees how these historic incidents are related to the current work they are doing and why specific safety measures are so important will be beneficial and effective in fostering a “safety-first" culture.
