One policy proposal that I believe is a great idea yet has not been adopted is the implementation of a nationwide universal basic income (UBI). Additionally, political resistance stems from misconceptions about encouraging dependence on government aid and disagreements over the role of welfare programs (Ferguson, 2018). The idea is often viewed as utopian or financially unfeasible, which hampers its adoption. However, pilot programs in countries like Finland have shown positive impacts, indicating that UBI could be a transformative policy. Implementing UBI nationwide would require overcoming substantial political and economic barriers, but its potential to support economic stability and social equity makes it a compelling policy proposal worth pursuing.
