Identify individual leadership strengths and opportunities for development
The development of strong leadership qualities is essential for effective personal and professional growth. This assignment requires self-assessment and reflection on leadership styles, strengths, and areas for improvement. It encompasses three primary components: evaluating personal leadership strengths through assessments, understanding behavioral tendencies via the DISC profile, and creating an infographic to visually represent these insights. This comprehensive process aims to foster self-awareness, reinforce leadership strengths, and identify developmental opportunities that align with individual personality traits and leadership truths outlined in literature.
Part 1: Personal Leadership Reflection
In the first phase, students are tasked with completing the Leadership Assessment provided in an Excel format. This self-evaluation helps identify core leadership strengths by reflecting on past performances, successes, and challenges. To deepen understanding, students must answer accompanying questions documented in a Word file, ensuring answers demonstrate knowledge of the leadership truths discussed in "The Truth About Leadership" textbook. This reflection allows students to recognize specific truths that resonate with their experiences and highlight how these truths influence their leadership style.
Critical in this phase is honest self-assessment and connecting theoretical concepts to personal behavior. Recognizing one's strengths and weaknesses guides targeted development and provides a foundation for the subsequent assessment using the DISC profile.
Part 2: DISC Behavioral Assessment
The second component involves taking the DISC personality assessment available online at the specified link. Students are instructed to respond swiftly, focusing on how they behave in their school environment, thus simulating real-life tendencies in leadership scenarios. To preserve results, students must capture a screenshot of their DISC profile, as data is lost once the session ends.
Following the assessment, students need to interpret their dominant DISC style—D (Dominance), I (Influence), S (Steadiness), or C (Conscientiousness)—and explore the associated traits on the assessment webpage. This step aims to provide insights into behavioral tendencies, strengths, and potential areas for growth, which are integral for effective leadership development.
Part 3: Infographic Creation of Leadership Profile
The final part encourages students to synthesize their assessment results into a visually engaging infographic. This profile should include two key sections: (a) the three leadership truths from the textbook that resonate most with the student, along with personal summaries demonstrating the application of these truths in their lives; and (b) one or two major DISC profile strengths with trait descriptions and examples of how these traits facilitate effective leadership.
Students are free to utilize any digital infographic tools such as Piktochart, Canva, or Easel.ly, with creative freedom in colors and styles. This visual representation serves as a personal leadership portfolio and will be expanded in the final course project, with additional sections added later. The infographic aims to capture a snapshot of personal leadership qualities in an accessible and compelling format.
Deliverables for this assignment include the completed Word document of leadership assessments, a screenshot of DISC results, and the electronic infographic. This holistic approach encourages self-awareness, strategic thinking, and visual communication—all vital for developing impactful leadership skills.
