Identify the cultural event that you plan to experience to fulfill the requirements for the main project. What event have you identified? Where is the agency/activity that you plan to attend? When are you planning to attend the event/activity? What is the specific date and time?

How does this activity/event differ from your own diverse experience? What challenges you foresee with completing this project? What are you looking forward to as you complete this project? Have you reviewed the resources and practiced using Personal Capture to create a recorded PowerPoint presentation, so you are prepared to submit the presentation correctly (see Document: Kaltura Personal Capture - QuickStart Guide (PDF) in Required Resources)?

For my cultural event experience, I have chosen to attend a traditional Japanese tea ceremony at a local cultural center that specializes in Asian arts and traditions. This event is scheduled for Saturday, September 15th, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The cultural center is located downtown and offers demonstrations and participatory experiences designed to introduce visitors to Japanese customs, arts, and social practices associated with the tea ceremony.

The Japanese tea ceremony, known as "Chanoyu," is a highly ritualized activity that emphasizes harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. My decision to attend this event stems from a personal fascination with Japanese culture and a desire to understand its traditions more deeply. The center facilitates this experience through a guided demonstration by a trained tea master, followed by an opportunity for attendees to participate. This setup allows me to engage actively with the tradition and observe the nuanced etiquette involved in preparing and serving matcha, the powdered green tea used in these ceremonies.

This event differs significantly from my own cultural background and daily experiences. Growing up in a Western environment, my cultural practices are rooted in different social customs, communication styles, and artistic expressions. Unlike the structured and meditative nature of the tea ceremony, my cultural experiences tend to focus more on social gatherings centered around food, music, and informal interactions. Engaging in the tea ceremony will provide me with firsthand insight into Japanese aesthetics and philosophical perspectives, broadening my understanding of how culture shapes social behavior and community bonding.

One of the main challenges I foresee in completing this project is capturing the essence of the experience authentically. Since I plan to create a recorded PowerPoint presentation summarizing my experience, I will need to effectively communicate the significance of the event along with visual and auditory elements that capture the environment and activities. This requires good preparation, including practicing the use of tools like Kaltura Personal Capture. Ensuring my presentation is clear, engaging, and correctly submitted is essential for fulfilling the project requirements.

Additionally, managing my time to attend the event and prepare the presentation concurrently may pose logistical challenges. I need to ensure I arrive early enough to fully experience the event and have ample time to record and edit my presentation without feeling rushed. Despite these challenges, I am looking forward to the opportunity to immerse myself in a new cultural practice, which will enhance my intercultural competency and contribute to my personal growth. The experience will also prepare me for similar cultural engagement and documentation in future academic and professional settings.

To ensure success in my project, I have reviewed the resources provided, including the Kaltura Personal Capture QuickStart Guide. I have practiced recording my presentation to familiarize myself with the process, aiming to submit a polished and comprehensive account of my experience. I believe this preparation will enable me to share my insights effectively and meet the project’s objectives, fostering a deeper appreciation for diverse cultural traditions.
