Throughout my career and personal experiences, I have encountered various healthcare situations where cultural understanding played an essential role in patient outcomes. This reflection will illustrate a particular instance from my experience that highlights the importance of cultural competence and how it aligns with the concepts learned in IHP 410.

Personal Experience in Healthcare

One notable experience occurred during my time volunteering at a community health center in a diverse urban area. I assisted a nurse who was treating a patient from a different cultural background. The patient was a recent immigrant who spoke little English and was struggling to understand the treatment plan prescribed for their chronic illness. The communication barrier created a challenging situation, and it became evident that personal experiences and cultural factors were influencing the patient’s health decisions.

I recognized the need for culturally competent care in this scenario. The nurse took the time to engage a translator and explain the diagnosis using visual aids.
