In Chapter 3, we explored how heredity (our genetics) and the environment (our upbringing and surroundings) influence our personality and overall identity. Reflecting on my own life, I recognize that certain physical traits, such as my eye color and hair type, are direct results of my genetic inheritance from my parents. Beyond physical attributes, I believe genetics also play a significant role in shaping personality traits. For example, I tend to be generally relaxed and easygoing, which I suspect may have a genetic basis, as some studies suggest that traits like anxiety and calmness can be inherited (Plomin & DeFries, 1983). My familial background shows similarities in temperament to my parents, indicating that genetics contribute substantially to who I am today.
However, my environment has been equally influential in shaping my personality. Growing up in a supportive and communicative family, I learned the importance of expressiveness and empathy. My parents’ warm interactions and encouragement fostered my confidence and social skills. Additionally, interactions with my siblings and other family members taught me patience and cooperation. Outside my family, my experiences with peers and teachers expanded my social understanding and helped develop my values and perspectives. Exposure to diverse viewpoints and collaborative learning environments helped me adapt and become more open-minded and resilient. In conclusion, both my genetic inheritance and environmental influences have significantly contributed to my personality traits, with genetics providing a foundation and environment shaping my behaviors, attitudes, and social skills over time.
