Instructions This assignment has several warm-up activities and one main task
This assignment has several warm-up activities and one main task. Please ensure you have completed each warm-up activity before completing the main task. The main task involves searching for and analyzing research from the library on a social work topic of interest, possibly related to previous coursework.
Warm-up Activity 1: Getting Acquainted with the NCU Library
The NCU Library supports research needs by providing access to scholarly resources, reference services, information literacy instruction, inter-library loan, and personalized research consultations. Students should familiarize themselves with these services, including research databases, inter-library loan requests, and workshops.
Warm-up Activity 2: Considering Information Literacy
Review the NCU Library’s Research Process page, especially links and tutorials, to prepare for resource searching. Select a social work topic—such as a specific problem (e.g., infidelity, ADHD), therapy model (e.g., Bowen theory), or life stage (e.g., parenting)—and compile APA-formatted references of relevant resources found during your search.
Warm-up Activity 3: Learning about RefWorks
Explore how to use RefWorks, an online tool for managing references, to help collect and generate citations for your research sources.
Warm-up Activity 4: Evaluating Internet Research Sources
Use the provided guides from the Research Process section to critically assess website sources for authority, publisher reputation, publication date, primary vs. secondary sources, cross-referencing, and audience bias to ensure the quality and credibility of online materials.
Main Task
Perform a search in the library for five peer-reviewed journal articles, one book, and one professional resource (website or other). Focus on sources related to diverse and oppressed populations within your chosen social work topic. Create a table listing your resources with these columns: resource citation/type, database used, keywords, search limiters, and how the resource contributes to your knowledge base. Ensure all entries are in APA format.
Finally, conclude with a brief 1-2 page paper describing one of the following options: (1) select a researcher in your area, formulate questions for them based on your reading, and describe what you would ask; or (2) choose a resource management tool, justify your choice, and explain how you set it up and plan to use it; or (3) contact a librarian with a question, detail the question and response, and reflect on how this facilitated your research. The entire submission should be 2-3 pages, including the resource table and your reflection or explanation.
Paper For Above instruction
In tackling this assignment, I began by immersing myself in the available resources and tools designed to support effective research within Northcentral University's library system. The initial step involved familiarizing myself with the library’s offerings, including access to research databases, inter-library loan services, and workshops. This foundational understanding ensured that I could efficiently locate high-quality, scholarly resources pertinent to my chosen topic in social work.
Next, I selected a research topic that interests me—specifically, the application of Narrative Therapy in addressing trauma among oppressed populations. This subject aligns with my academic and professional interests and offers rich opportunities for exploration within the library’s resource collections. To prepare for my search, I reviewed the library’s Research Process page, which provided tutorials and links to refine my searching strategies. I learned to effectively use keywords such as "Narrative Therapy," "trauma," "oppressed populations," and "cultural competence" while applying search limiters such as "peer-reviewed," "full text," and specific publication date ranges to filter for relevant, high-quality sources.
In addition to traditional library resources, I explored RefWorks, an online reference management tool offered through the library. I set up my account by following tutorials, creating folders for different resource categories (e.g., articles, books, websites), and practiced importing references from database searches. I found RefWorks invaluable for organizing references systematically, which simplifies citation management during the writing process.
Furthermore, I critically assessed internet sources using the library’s website evaluation guides. I scrutinized potential online materials for authority by examining author credentials, publisher reputation, and the presence of bias or conflicting interests. I verified the publication dates to ensure currency and distinguished between primary and secondary sources, prioritizing original research articles and official reports from reputable organizations. This process strengthened my ability to distinguish between credible scholarly sources and less reliable internet content.
Following these preparatory activities, I proceeded to my main research task. Using the database search tools, I identified five peer-reviewed journal articles, one scholarly book, and one professional website focused on Narrative Therapy and trauma in marginalized populations, including refugees, racial minorities, and economically disadvantaged groups. I systematically documented each resource in a comprehensive table, including APA citations, database descriptions, keywords used, search restrictions, and summaries of each source’s contribution to my understanding of the topic.
For example, one of the articles I selected was Coyne’s longitudinal study (2016) on relational aggression among adolescents, which, although not directly linked to Narrative Therapy, provided insights into developmental and social factors relevant to trauma and behavioral interventions. I also included books on Narrative Therapy theory, along with websites from organizations specializing in trauma and social justice frameworks. These resources offered diverse perspectives and empirical findings that deepen understanding of culturally sensitive interventions with oppressed groups.
Concluding the assignment, I chose to reflect on how I would engage with a researcher working in the area of trauma-informed Narrative Therapy. I formulated questions concerning methodological approaches, cultural considerations, and practical applications tailored to oppressed populations. This exercise allowed me to synthesize research findings and envision future collaborations or discussions to enhance my practical skills and academic knowledge.
Throughout this process, I appreciated the value of library tools such as RefWorks and the importance of critical evaluation skills for internet sources. The comprehensive search and organization strategy not only improved my resource management but also expanded my understanding of effective research practices in social work. This experience underscores the significance of leveraging library resources and critical appraisal techniques in producing scholarly, credible research to support social work practice, especially when working with diverse and underserved communities.
