The purpose of this leadership journal is to critically reflect on my practicum experience working alongside the nurse leader in the emergency department during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As a nurse mentor, I have been engaged in various activities that not only deepen my understanding of leadership principles but also enhance my capacity to serve effectively amid complex healthcare challenges. Throughout Topics 9-10, I dedicated significant hours to observing, participating, and reflecting on these activities, which include managing COVID-19 protocols, staff coordination, patient care, and interprofessional collaboration.
One of the key practicum activities involved working closely with my nurse leader to implement and adapt COVID-19 management strategies within the emergency department. This involved evaluating evolving hospital policies, ensuring staff compliance, and communicating effectively with both staff and patients. I observed how the nurse leader demonstrated resilience, adaptability, and transparency—values critical to effective leadership during a crisis. For example, during a shift, I witnessed the leader promptly address staff concerns about PPE shortages by providing clear information and advocating for additional supplies. This not only alleviated anxiety but also fostered trust and a sense of teamwork among staff members.
Reflecting on these activities, I appreciate the importance of servant leadership in healthcare settings, particularly during a pandemic. Honesty manifests in transparent communication about PPE availability, protocols, and changes in hospital policies. Compassion is demonstrated through active listening to staff concerns, offering emotional support, and understanding the personal toll of pandemic-related stress. Fairness appears in equitable distribution of work assignments and recognizing the contributions of all team members. I endeavor to embody these values daily by maintaining open dialogue, demonstrating empathy, and ensuring equitable treatment of team members, especially during these challenging times.
Preparing those affected by my practicum project has involved transparent communication, education, and inclusion. I have organized briefings with staff to explain upcoming changes related to COVID-19 procedures, ensuring that everyone understands their roles and rationale behind new protocols. Engaging staff in discussions about the challenges faced allows them to voice concerns and contribute ideas, fostering a sense of ownership and collaborative problem-solving. Additionally, I have coordinated with other departments to streamline processes, which helps in mitigating disruptions during implementation. This preparation aims to minimize resistance, build confidence, and promote a shared commitment to providing safe, high-quality care amidst ongoing pandemic demands.
