5. An approved appeal is valid for six (6) months. Students who do not return within six (6) months of an approved appeal will need to re-appeal.

6. A denied appeal is considered final and binding. You may not re-appeal unless new information is presented for consideration.

SECTION III: SAP APPEAL

Since my initial decision to pursue my educational endeavors at Kaplan University, I have faced several challenges that significantly impacted my academic performance. Primarily, I have been caring for my elderly grandmother suffering from severe dementia. This responsibility took a toll on my mental and physical well-being. After her passing, I struggled with grief while also coping with a geographical relocation, which further affected my focus and stability. Additionally, financial burdens tripled due to unexpected expenses, compelling me to work extended hours to provide for myself. This excessive workload drew my attention away from academics, creating an imbalance in my professional and educational life. However, since December, I have transitioned into a more stable work schedule that allows me to focus on my education again, leading me to prioritize my return to Kaplan to complete my degree.

I have gathered relevant documentation regarding my employment circumstances, the death of my grandmother (Mary Louise Lundquist), and my relocation from Washington, NJ to Whippany, NJ. This documentation supports my appeal and reflects my personal trials and commitment toward academic success.

Action Plan for Success

To ensure my success upon re-entry, I have developed a comprehensive action plan that enables me to manage my time and commitments effectively. Recognizing the importance of a flexible schedule, I have arranged my professional hours to allow sufficient time for my studies. My work commitments account for 42 hours weekly, but I am dedicating a minimum of two hours each day specifically for academic work. I have broken down my study times into manageable blocks, with focused periods scheduled for reading, discussion questions, and other coursework from Tuesday to Thursday. Moreover, I am setting aside Friday to Sunday for research, exam preparation, and assignments. This method provides a structured approach to my studies, amounting to 23 hours weekly, while still allowing time to engage in personal life and self-care.

Additionally, I have prepared a weekly schedule outlining how I intend to allocate my time:

  • Monday: Work from 12pm-10pm, School from 8am-10am, Personal tasks from 10am-12pm.
  • Tuesday: Work from 8am-4pm, School from 6pm-9pm, Personal tasks from 4pm-6pm.
