The focus for the next couple of weeks needs to be completing a revised draft of your Proposal. Post an update of your progress on your dissertation proposal. How will you work with your chair to help complete this revised draft? What do you need to do to complete this draft? What challenges have you encountered while working on your proposal this week?
I turned in a revised prospectus draft on August 1, 2017, and received feedback on August 8, 2017. During this period, I continued reading the templates for both the dissertation prospectus and the dissertation proposal. I participated in several scheduled and unscheduled conference calls regarding my progress, explaining my personal situation, which is now resolved, allowing me to refocus on my work. I submitted the chapter 1 dissertation proposal draft at approximately 11:30 p.m. and, upon reviewing the dissertation proposal template, I realized there are many sections that still need to be addressed. This realization has made me feel overwhelmed, but I am motivated to catch up. The revised dissertation prospectus draft was six days late, and while I am grateful that my personal issues are resolved, I recognize that the distraction caused me to lose focus on my coursework and assignments.
My primary concerns now are chapters 2 and 3, as I have not yet read their content due to missing sections in the revised prospectus draft, which was temporarily returned to me, despite being submitted for grading. I find the weekly conversations with Dr. Danielle Rowell helpful, but I wish there were more one-on-one time to receive detailed, line-by-line guidance on what I am doing wrong. Constructive criticism is welcome, but I believe a more structured, perhaps classroom-based, approach to research methods—such as a general research methods course that walks students through the templates—would be highly beneficial. This would prepare students better for advanced courses in research design and dissertation work.
Aligning research design and advanced research design courses back-to-back, followed by coursework for dissertations 1 through 4, could streamline the process. The most significant challenge I faced was personal issues at a critical point in my doctoral journey, which I have discussed with and resolved through my advisor, Dr. Danielle Rowell. These personal issues caused a loss of focus and motivation, impacting my progress. However, I now have renewed energy and focus. I believe that ongoing conference calls, along with the support of classmates—especially those nearby in California—can provide moral support and help me stay on track throughout this journey.

The late submission of the prospectus draft, while necessary, added to my anxiety. However, I have now resolved these personal concerns and regained a positive outlook. I recognize that the lack of detailed, face-to-face guidance has been a challenge; thus, I plan to incorporate more structured review sessions with my chair and potentially form a peer support group with classmates in California. Sharing experiences and providing mutual encouragement can foster accountability and reduce feelings of isolation during this process.
Furthermore, I believe that integrating research methods courses earlier in the program, with a focus on hands-on template work, would strengthen students' readiness for the dissertation phase. This approach could reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed at the proposal stage and foster a more confident, skillful engagement with research design. Aligning coursework in research design and advanced research methods back-to-back could streamline the transition from coursework to dissertation work, leading to more efficient progress and better preparation for doctoral-level research challenges.
In conclusion, my immediate goal is to complete my revised proposal draft by collaborating closely with my chair, utilizing structured review strategies, and seeking support from peers. I am optimistic that these measures, combined with my renewed focus, will enable me to overcome the current challenges and move forward successfully in my doctoral journey.
