In my review of five websites covering analytics, I found that each site emphasizes the integration of technology, data interpretation, and decision support as critical to competitive advantage.
One decision support tool that stood out is Microsoft's Power BI, a popular business analytics platform. Power BI provides data visualization, dashboards, and reporting features that enable managers to analyze complex data sets swiftly. Its purpose is to facilitate informed decision-making by transforming raw data into interactive insights. The software works by connecting to various data sources, aggregating and cleaning data, then presenting it through customizable visualizations. This supports managerial decisions by providing real-time, accessible information that can be analyzed for strategic planning, operational efficiency, and risk management.
In relation to Simon’s (1977) philosophy that managerial decision-making is synonymous with the entire management process, I believe this perspective underscores the integral role decisions play from planning to controlling. Managers constantly collect data, evaluate alternatives, and implement actions—all core aspects of the decision-making process. For example, a production manager evaluating supply chain disruptions must analyze data, consider alternatives, and make decisions that impact efficiency and costs. This holistic view affirms that good decision-making is not isolated but central to effective management across all functions.
Going forward, I will apply this understanding by integrating data analytics into my problem-solving toolkit within academic projects and professional settings.
