Leveraging Human Capital: Acquiring Employees
Every organization strives for success and societal impact, necessitating ongoing evaluation of current practices and areas for growth. Critical analyses at both employee and organizational levels can be accomplished through needs assessments, which identify gaps between organizational expectations and available resources (Canada, 2020). The outcomes of a needs assessment inform strategic decision-making by highlighting problems, opportunities, and data-driven insights.
This paper illustrates the use of a strategic needs assessment, specifically employing the SWOT analysis, to evaluate five internal departments within the Stabilization and Crisis Intervention Unit (SCIU), an organization affiliated with the State of Oregon. The analysis aimed to determine staffing needs, current job functions, training practices, and technological deficiencies. Results underscored the importance of upgrading technological systems and expanding professional development opportunities for staff, with particular emphasis on streamlining nurses’ documentation processes to minimize workload and enhance community services.
The comprehensive needs assessment revealed that technological enhancement and targeted education programs align with the core strategies for SCIU's long-term success. Implementing a dedicated computer program to monitor and address training gaps, along with assigning personnel to oversee these initiatives, would improve operational efficiency and employee performance. This strategic focus would facilitate better resource allocation, reduce administrative burdens, and enable staff to dedicate more time to direct client interactions and community impact.
Developing a modernized charting system, upgrading IT infrastructure, and fostering continuous staff education are vital steps for SCIU’s advancement. Human resources should facilitate tailored training programs to ensure staff adheres to regulations and policies, while management can employ these systems for real-time tracking of departmental needs and performance metrics. These improvements will collectively bolster service quality, operational efficiency, and organizational agility, ensuring SCIU remains responsive to community needs into the future.
