Plagiarism Prevention Resource Kit The Walden University Student Handbook broadly defines plagiarism as the “use of intellectual material produced by another person without acknowledging its source.” Students come to Walden with a wide range of backgrounds, and some students may be less familiar with this definition of plagiarism—and the expectations that come with it—than others.
Some students are new to paraphrasing, while other students are new to APA citation rules, both of which can be a challenge to avoiding plagiarism. Walden has many resources to help students understand the expectations for accurately citing the sources they use in their writing. To maintain academic integrity and effectively avoid plagiarism in my assignments, I will adopt several strategic approaches. First, I will diligently cite all sources using APA format, ensuring that I credit original authors for their ideas, data, and words. I will also develop my paraphrasing skills to restate information in my own words while accurately reflecting original meanings, thus avoiding verbatim copying. Additionally, I will utilize plagiarism detection tools, such as Turnitin, to review my work before submission and identify any inadvertent similarities or unintentional plagiarism. I will also keep thorough notes and records of my sources during research to prevent accidental omission of citations.
Paraphrasing and synthesizing professional literature are vital skills that will strengthen my future nurse scholar-practitioner practice. Paraphrasing allows me to distill complex research into understandable, relevant information, demonstrating my comprehension and reducing reliance on direct quotations. Synthesizing involves integrating multiple sources to develop a comprehensive understanding of a topic, which enhances critical thinking and supports evidence-based practice. These skills enable me to present information ethically and accurately, fostering trust and credibility.
