Module 2: Case First View - Quantitative Presentation
Module 2 Casefirst View The Presentation Titledquantitative Research
Develop four research questions that reflect education and/or training topics of interest. Three of these questions must be quantitative research questions, and one a qualitative research question. Your quantitative research questions must each represent one of the following: descriptive research question, relational research question, and causal research question. Identify attributes or variables included in each research question. Be sure to designate the type of variable identified, for example: independent variable (IV), dependent variable (DV), and/or covariate (CoV). Describe the type of data that will be measured for each variable. Please designate whether the data is categorical (i.e., nominal or ordinal data) or continuous (i.e., interval or ratio data).
For the Module 2 SLP: Your task for the Module 2 SLP assignment is twofold: First, read Scenario 1: Culturally relevant teaching: A case study on teaching statistics in the high school setting. Then use your completed matrix to complete the second requirement: Second, write a 3- to 4-page narrative essay in which you identify key features in Scenario 1.
You will answer the following questions: What type of research is used in the study? What is the research problem? Indicate examples in the study that contribute to the research problem. What type of research questions are presented? What are the research questions? What type of variables are used in the study and what are the variables? List 3 authors and the role they played in the literature review. What is the sample population? What method of data collection was used? How was data analysis accomplished? What were the findings of the study?
Requirements: Please be sure to include an introductory paragraph within your essay that states the purpose of the Module 2 SLP assignment and informs the reader of the ideas to be discussed. Also, please follow the APA format and style requirements, and include an APA formatted reference list. Remember, in Module 4 you will combine all prior SLP module assignments and the new Module 4 assignment, as well as an overall introduction, conclusion, and bibliography, into one final document.
Discussion: Describe the four primary types of data in quantitative research: nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. Compose a quantitative research question (or use one of the questions you composed for Module 2 Case Assignment) and identify the "variables" included in the question and the "type of data" each variable would measure.
Paper For Above instruction
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate the ability to develop and analyze research questions within the context of educational research, specifically focusing on quantitative and qualitative approaches. The exercise involves formulating research questions aligned with specific types of quantitative research—descriptive, relational, and causal—as well as a qualitative question, and identifying the related variables, their attributes, and data types. Moreover, it requires conducting a critical analysis of a case study on culturally relevant teaching, examining the research methodology, population, data collection, and analysis procedures, culminating in a comprehensive narrative that synthesizes these elements.
Development of Research Questions
In developing the research questions, I focused on educational topics that are pertinent to current teaching practices and student outcomes. The first quantitative research question is descriptive, aiming to understand the prevalence of a specific teaching strategy: “What percentage of high school teachers use project-based learning in their mathematics classes?” This question involves the attribute of teaching practices as the variable, measured via categorical data (nominal, e.g., yes/no). The second question is relational: “Is there a relationship between teachers’ years of experience and their use of culturally relevant pedagogies?” Here, the independent variable is years of experience (ratio data), and the dependent variable is the use of culturally relevant pedagogy (categorical, nominal), assessed through survey responses. The third quantitative question is causal: “Does participation in professional development on inclusive teaching methods increase teachers’ implementation of differentiated instruction?” The independent variable is participation in professional development (categorical, nominal), and the dependent variable is the frequency or extent of implementing differentiated instruction (ratio data). The qualitative research question seeks to explore perceptions: “How do teachers perceive the impact of culturally relevant teaching on student engagement?” This question aims to gather in-depth insights through interviews or open-ended survey responses.
Variables and Data Types
For the descriptive question, the variable is teaching practice, which is categorical (nominal: yes/no). In the relational question, years of experience is a ratio variable, measurable on a continuous scale, and pedagogical approach is categorical (nominal: culturally relevant or not). For the causal question, participation in professional development is categorical (nominal), while the extent of differentiated instruction implementation is ratio data, measured on a continuous or ordinal scale depending on the measurement instrument. The qualitative question does not involve variables in the traditional sense but aims to capture perceptions and experiences.
Analysis of Scenario 1: Culturally Relevant Teaching
The study uses a qualitative research approach, specifically phenomenology, to explore teachers' perceptions of culturally relevant teaching. The research problem centers on understanding how high school teachers perceive and implement culturally relevant pedagogies to enhance student engagement in diverse classrooms. The study exemplifies this by highlighting teachers’ experiences and challenges in adapting their teaching strategies to be culturally responsive. The research questions involve exploratory inquiries about teachers’ perceptions and practices, aligning with qualitative approaches aimed at depth rather than measurement.
Several variables, including teachers’ attitudes, classroom practices, and perceived barriers, are examined. The sample population consists of high school teachers across diverse schools, with data collected through interviews, observations, and surveys. Data analysis was carried out using thematic analysis to identify common themes related to culturally relevant teaching. The findings suggest that teachers who received professional development and collaborated with colleagues demonstrated greater confidence and more effective implementation of culturally relevant strategies.
Conclusion
This assignment exemplifies critical components in educational research, emphasizing the formulation of precise research questions, understanding variable types and data levels, and analyzing case studies to extract core methodological features. Effective research design hinges on clarity about the research problem, appropriate question types, and accurate identification of variables, all of which inform valid data collection and analysis. By integrating these elements, researchers can contribute meaningful insights to improving educational practices.
