Assignment 1

The style approach to leadership emphasizes the behavior styles and traits that leaders exhibit, focusing on how leaders interact with followers and influence their behavior. Central to this approach are two primary kinds of behaviors: task behaviors and relationship behaviors. Task behaviors involve the actions leaders take to ensure tasks are completed efficiently, such as organizing, coordinating, and providing clear directions. Relationship behaviors, on the other hand, focus on fostering positive relationships, supporting, and developing followers through encouragement and open communication (Northouse, 2018). Understanding these behaviors helps leaders adapt their style to suit different situations and followers’ needs.

The central purpose of the style approach is to identify and describe effective leadership behaviors that can be adopted across different contexts. It aims to enhance leader effectiveness by emphasizing predictable behaviors that influence followers positively. This approach suggests that by developing appropriate task and relational behaviors, leaders can improve team cohesion, motivation, and performance. It encourages leaders to assess their behavior styles and modify them accordingly, fostering a flexible leadership style tailored to specific circumstances (Lewin et al., 1939). Ultimately, the style approach underscores that leadership effectiveness largely depends on behavioral choices rather than innate traits alone.

Assignment 2

Effective leadership requires deliberate steps to foster a productive environment. Two critical steps include developing self-awareness and practicing active listening. Developing self-awareness involves understanding one's strengths, weaknesses, and leadership style, which allows leaders to adapt their approach appropriately. For example, in my current role as a team member, I noticed that my supervisor practices self-awareness by openly discussing team goals and recognizing individual contributions. This transparency motivates the team and enhances accountability. Practicing active listening entails attentively hearing followers’ concerns, providing feedback, and demonstrating empathy. In my experience, when leaders listen actively, followers feel valued and understood, leading to increased collaboration and trust (Brown & Treviño, 2009).

Applying these steps in a real-world situation, I observed my supervisor making efforts to listen carefully during staff meetings, addressing concerns that had previously gone unnoticed. This action created a more inclusive environment and improved overall team functioning. According to leadership theory, the most appropriate style for leading me would be a participative or democratic style, which encourages collaboration and input from team members. I agree with this assessment because I thrive in environments where my opinions are considered and where I can contribute to decision-making processes. Such a leadership style aligns with my preference for engagement and shared responsibility, ultimately motivating me to perform my best and feel valued.
