Racism remains an enduring and pervasive issue worldwide, reflecting deep-seated social, economic, and political inequalities. It manifests through prejudice, discrimination, and systemic bias against individuals based on their race or ethnicity. The article I selected offers a perspective that emphasizes the persistence of institutional racism and its impacts on marginalized communities, highlighting that racism is not merely individual acts of prejudice but embedded within societal structures (Williams, 2020). This perspective extends my understanding of racism by illustrating how structural barriers perpetuate inequality, even when overt racist attitudes diminish. The article argues that addressing racism requires systemic reforms alongside individual education and awareness, prompting me to recognize the importance of policy change in combating racial injustices.

In contrast, my own perspective initially focused more on individual responsibility and personal biases. I believed that change begins with personal reflection and action. However, reading the article broadened my viewpoint, revealing that while personal effort is essential, it is insufficient without addressing systemic inequalities entrenched in education, employment, and justice systems. I agree with the author that systemic reforms are critical to eradicate racism effectively. My agreement stems from understanding that systemic racism, evidenced through disparities in wealth, health, and education, sustains racial inequalities across generations (Alexander, 2018). This expanded perspective pushes me to consider advocacy for institutional policy changes as vital components of anti-racism efforts.

Nevertheless, I also identify some areas of disagreement, particularly regarding the pace and scope of change. The article suggests that comprehensive systemic reform can be achieved within a few years through policy advances, which I find optimistic. I believe structural change is complex and deeply rooted, often requiring decades of sustained effort and societal transformation. My disagreement stems from skepticism that quick policy fixes will be enough to dismantle deeply ingrained racial biases. Instead, I argue that ongoing societal education, community engagement, and intersectional approaches are necessary for meaningful and lasting progress (Crenshaw, 2019).

Reading this article significantly expanded my understanding of racism, especially in recognizing the importance of systemic change alongside individual actions. It clarified that addressing racial disparities involves tackling institutional policies and practices that advantage one group over another. This insight motivates me to advocate for comprehensive policy reforms, support community-based initiatives, and educate others about the systemic nature of racism. Overall, my perspective has shifted from a predominantly individual focus to a more holistic view that incorporates systemic reform as essential for achieving racial equality.
