Reliability in testing and assessment refers to the consistency and stability of a measurement over time or across different observers. It indicates the extent to which an assessment yields the same results under consistent conditions. For example, a reliable test administered to the same individual repeatedly under similar circumstances should produce similar scores. Types of reliability include test-retest reliability, inter-rater reliability, and internal consistency. Ensuring high reliability minimizes measurement error and enhances confidence in the test results (American Psychological Association, 2014).
Validity pertains to the accuracy of an assessment in measuring what it is intended to measure. A valid test accurately reflects the construct or trait it aims to assess. Validity can be categorized into several types, including content validity (the test covers the relevant content), criterion validity (the test correlates with an external criterion), and construct validity (the test accurately measures the theoretical construct). Valid assessments are essential for making appropriate and meaningful decisions based on test results (Kaplan & Saccuzzo, 2017).
Both validity and reliability are crucial because they complement each other to determine the overall quality of an assessment. An assessment cannot be valid if it is unreliable because inconsistent results cannot accurately reflect the construct. Conversely, a reliable test that lacks validity does not measure the intended attribute accurately. Therefore, both are necessary to ensure that test outcomes are both consistent and meaningful for decision-making purposes in psychological and educational contexts (Craig et al., 2014).
Norming refers to the process of establishing norms or standard scores based on a representative sample of the population. It involves administering the assessment to a large, diverse group to generate normative data, which provides a basis for interpreting individual scores. Norms allow practitioners to compare an individual's performance to that of others, facilitating meaningful comparisons and assessments of relative standing (Eysenck, 2012).
Standardized testing involves administering the same set of instructions, questions, and scoring procedures to all examinees, ensuring consistency across assessments. Its purpose is to facilitate fair comparisons among individuals. In contrast, non-standardized testing does not follow a uniform administration protocol and often relies on qualitative judgments or flexible procedures, making comparison more difficult (Linn & Miller, 2017).
Norm-referenced assessments compare an individual's performance to that of a normative sample, providing percentile ranks or standard scores. These assessments help determine relative standing within a population. Conversely, criterion-referenced assessments measure an individual's mastery of specific skills or content based on predetermined criteria, regardless of how others perform (Popham, 2014).
Group assessments involve testing multiple individuals simultaneously, which is efficient and often used in educational and organizational settings. Individual assessments are conducted with one person at a time, providing more in-depth information about the examinee’s unique characteristics and abilities (Stoet, 2017).
Scales of measurement vary based on the nature of the data. Nominal scales categorize data without inherent order (e.g., gender, ethnicity). Ordinal scales rank data in a meaningful order but do not specify the difference between ranks (e.g., class ranking). Interval scales have equal intervals between points but lack a true zero (e.g., temperature in Celsius). Ratio scales possess all qualities of interval scales, with a meaningful zero point, allowing for ratios (e.g., weight, height). Each scale influences the type of statistical analysis appropriate for the data (Salkind, 2017).
The measures of central tendency — mean, median, and mode — describe the typical score in a data set. The mean is the arithmetic average, the median is the middle value when data are ordered, and the mode is the most frequently occurring score. These provide different perspectives on the data’s central point, useful for summarizing and interpreting results (Gravetter & Wallnau, 2014).
Indices of variability include measures like range, variance, and standard deviation, which describe how spread out scores are in a distribution. They help assess the consistency or diversity of data points, impacting interpretation, particularly in understanding the degree of dispersion around the central tendency (Gravetter & Wallnau, 2014).
Distributions can be normal or skewed. A normal distribution is symmetric with most scores clustered around the mean, forming a bell-shaped curve. Skewed distributions are asymmetric, with a longer tail on one side, indicating a concentration of scores at one end. Recognizing the distribution shape is crucial for selecting appropriate statistical tests and interpreting data accurately (Field, 2013).
Correlations measure the strength and direction of relationships between variables, typically expressed as a correlation coefficient (r). A positive correlation indicates that variables move together, while a negative correlation suggests they move inversely. Correlations inform about associations but do not imply causation, and they are widely used in research to examine relationships among psychological constructs (Cohen, 1988).
