Numbers can be used in a variety of different ways in data sets, hence Stevens in 1946 developed a way of distinguishing between various uses. Stevens details four levels of measurement, each of which gives rise to numbers which carry different amounts of information. These measurements scales are: Nominal scale, Ordinal scale, Interval scale, Ratio scale.
