Personal Experience Papers (PEPs): The paper should be completed in 2-3 pages. Each personal experience paper will assess the class member’s critical thinking skills and use of standard English. Use your own personal experience as if you are the person experiencing this. YOU MUST ONLY USE 2 SOURCES. I will be attaching a sample essay that was written on the same topic, but I want it to completely differ from the sample paper, rather write the essay from your heart what family means to you.

Here is the format for each of the personal experience papers: Statement of Problem: State the chosen communication concept or principle to which your personal experience is to be based on in the introduction of the paper. Also in the introduction, explain your research goal(s). Literature Review: Discuss the chosen concept or principle based on both primary (a minimum of one outside research is required per PEP) and secondary information (information from the textbook). Cite all sources listed on the references page in this section. My own experience of staying connected with my family across borders exemplifies how technological channels underpin emotional support, reassurance, and shared success.

In the context of long-distance family relationships, digital communication technologies—including video calls, messaging apps, and social media—serve as vital tools to support these maintenance behaviors. The textbook by Beebe, Beebe, and Redmond (2019) emphasizes that continuous and meaningful interaction fosters relational satisfaction and emotional closeness, which are critical for family bonds. Technology, therefore, acts as a crucial link that sustains our familial emotional support system and reinforces our shared identity.

Findings: My experience demonstrates that digital communication significantly enhances familial bonds, fulfilling the relational maintenance behaviors outlined in the literature. The regular video calls and messaging serve as reassurance, sharing life updates, and emotional support, which align with Stafford and Canary’s (1991) assurance and positivity strategies. Additionally, observing my family's consistent use of technology reveals that these channels facilitate ongoing social sharing—crucial in maintaining intimacy over distance as supported by Patterson’s (2014) findings. This personal experience exemplifies that technological communication enables sustaining emotional closeness, providing a sense of stability and support essential for personal well-being. Consequently, I find that the relational maintenance principle through digital means is integral for families separated by geographical borders, especially in the context of global mobility and international education.
