The development and potential deployment of these weapons raise profound ethical questions concerning the morality of delegating lethal decisions to machines. This case exemplifies a contested development in scientific progress, prompting debates about their ethical implications, international law, and the responsibilities of technological leaders. Through this analysis, I will apply Kantian ethics to evaluate the morality of autonomous weapon systems, considering at least four aspects of ethical rationale, and propose leadership recommendations to navigate the contested nature of this technological advancement.

Notably, the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, a coalition of NGOs and civil society organizations, has called for a global ban on fully autonomous weapons. The development of these systems exemplifies contested progress because it involves balancing technological innovation with core human ethical values concerning life, death, and moral responsibility.
